hi guys
is there anyone on here that builds pc's
i would really like a new pc one that is really dedicated to multi media work for video editing etc....
the thing is i would have a go at building one my self, but i dont really know what i'm doing in the respect of i dont know what processors go with which boards and how much ram you can put on a board etc etc
so would like someone that can to give me an idea of price to get something that i want built.
my requirements that i would like are;
does this sound out of reach......
- intel core duo proccesor or an equivilent middle of the range dont want the slow one but at at the same time i dont think i could afford the fastest
- preffably 2g ram
- between 200/400g hard drive would settle for less as i already have a 400g external
- cd rom drive and a dvd writer i like the two drive as it makes copying much easier.......
- good graphics card
- usb 2.0 and firewire axcessable from the front and prefably a multi card reader
- and wireless car so i can axcess my wireless network i have set up at home
- and to be able to run vista
the computer i have at the moment i really like but not sure how much it can be upgraded
has the 2 drives
the card reader usb and firewire axcessable from the front as well as more usb at the back
has wireless card
120g hard drive
think it only has 512 ram
has a nivda graphics card which now i have updated the drivers says its capable of hd but this comp is about 4 years old now so i would imagine there are better ones out there
and it runs an amd processor cant remeber which one
but this computer struggles to run pinnacle studio 10plus, and quite often crashes when editing alot of video.....it ran 9 plus with no problems but i think 10 is a bit more of a hungry program, so would like a better and faster comp to help this, as in the future i would like to upgrade to avid liquid 7
i also like to get on there and play around with photo shop etc designing my own lables for dvd's and there cases and stuff.........so would really like a comp that can multi task
can anyone help give me some advice and info or maybe even build one if the price is right
thanks for your time i know this is a long post

If you plan on doing alot of video editing look at running a 64bit OS. This will give u the flexibilty of adding more ram later as a 32Bit OS is actually capped at 3gig.
I would suggest an AMD6000+ CPU (excllent bang for buck at around the $220 range) then an 8800 Nvidia, if your budget allows go for the 640mb range if not the 320Mb will do. Then look at either 64Bit XP or 64 Vista. Throw 4 gig at it and you'll have an excellent PC that will gooble up big video files. Oh and if u wanna really go all the way look at 2xsata2 200gig Hdd's in Raid 0 ( bit hard to setup though if your not IT Inclined)
Can use your Exsiting CD/DVD Drive, But u will need to upgrade your PSU if u go the 8800 gfx card as its very power hungry. MInimum 600Watter
hey aussie thanks for your advice i was looking at this one on ebay what do you think??? he also said he would ad a card reader and firewire for 50 bucks, and i have just emailed him again to ask how much to put another optical drive in and wireless

do you think this looks good value for money??? i thought it seemed reasonable and he said that this set up will run avid liquid no problem

Good system except the gfx card, thats where he's making the cash, Sparkle GT8600 (Piece of ****e) something like that system would be fine but look for a good brand gfx card. Gigabyte, asus, xfx etc
Would it be worth getting Incisor (Dave Blears Computing) to build it and ship it as you really only need the box made up? You can source the monitor locally.

If you cant find what you want why not have a go at building it yourself. I have put together a couple although I have no background in computers (builder) and it is quite satisfying that the thing actually works when you have finished. My last one I built early in the year has -
Antec Sonata case
650 watt Seasonic power supply,
Good gigabyte motherboard (the best AMD board I could find at the time)
AM2 4600 processor (a few steps down from the top of the range as that was the best value)
4 gig of Geil ram
XFX 7950 GX2 video card that I got at a really good price as the new 8600 cards were coming in
a couple of serial ata hard drives
Pioneer DVD burner
external card reader in a 3.5 slot
Also has a usb tv tuner.
A wireless card could easily be added.
I bought most parts from one place but if you really want you can look in the papers for who has what you want at the best prices ( in Melbourne on Thursdays the Age newspaper has a large tv and IT advertising section)
The pc does everything I need and more. I believe that a really good video card and heaps of ram make the most difference to how a system performs.
Shame I missed this when you asked as I'm quite capable to build what I say are excellent towers. If you live more around the suburban area lik Penrith I'd suggest ARC for hardware, their website is a bit misleading but what they stock is good stuff. They are also in Parramatta, Silverwater and Chatswood, the other stores escape my mind right now.
