Sorry Pedro, but I think your computer just sucks, time to get another one.

Amasingly its because your running the latest and greatest operating system the world has ever seen(slight sarcasm).

Vista doesn't support everything just yet, you might want to goto the manufactures website of the usb device and see if there are any Vista drivers

Bit more information might help Pedro. What make and model USB device is it? Is it Vista compatible? (Check the Microsoft HCL) Does the manufacturer supply a Vista specific driver? (Check their website)

To give you some food for thought... in the last 3 days I've got a USB WD Passport drive - 250GB plug in and use no power supply needed - a SanDisk PCMCIA Ultra CF card reader - plug and go - and a SanDisk Cruz 2GB USB stick - also no problems. Vista Home Premium, no problems at all

Have the same problem with a twist. I purchased 2 identical cheap compaq presaio notebooks from DSE 6 mths ago. Both run vista home. Both connected to internet and kept up to date with updates etc. One accepts hardware you throw at it - usbs etc ... the other always goes searching for drivers and throws up security alerts and inevitably fails to recognize hardware. Probably in the settings somewhere but vista is such a dog to use cf windows 2000 or xp. It took me weeks to work out with the help of many web searches how to connect Samsung printer to my home network. Then the answer was from other users who worked out ways around not having properly prepared drivers. M$ should go down for this pathetic piece of software.

No updates for six months ? If you have an internet connection which is fairly small, say less than 500 meg download limit then whatever you do don't plug it in to your home network.

Im not joking, we had a brand spanking new laptop at work running Vista when it was first released and the first thing it did was suck down 700mb of updates. So for people who usually just check their email accounts and have small download limits it will be a nasty surprise for them when they get the next bill !!

first check the machine is seeing something is being inserted by opening up the device manager and expanding the usb section and look to see if a device or unknown device is added to the device list when you insert your usb stick.

    what chipset is the computer?
