Synchromagic backup
Hiya,
I've been using this little program for years
http://www.gelosoft.com/adescr.html
and its worked flawlessly till now.
All it does, on a schedule, is sync files across different drives. I have my PC (the main and important one), the kid's PC and the HTPC. The HTPC has a big data drive that I use as a backup target for the other two PCs.
I recently upgraded my PC to Vista but now Synchro won't sync my Outlook pst file to the target HTPC drive. If I delete the target, it'll copy the source the first time but that's all.
Now to explain, my pst file lives in an "Outlook" subdirectory, itself in my main "Us at home" directory on my local C drive. This directory contains all our editable, changeable, important files.
What's weird is that all other changed files within "us at home" synch across fine, but not the pst file.
I'm running Outlook 2007.
Any ideas greatly appreciated.
Mark

outlook isnt open or sitting active in the task manager is it? or is vista holding it open in some way..?
if the pst file is in use generally you wont be able to sync it as i beleive it gets locked in some form
i have a similar setup to yours.. but use beyond compare, i do manual backups tho... i dont keep that much important data any more, so i cant be bothered to automate it... i know if i forget to close outlook tho, that it will refuse to sync it...
Thanks

Thanks Steve, but if Outlook is still running I'd get an error. I think its got something to do with read/write permissions on the target file but I can't figure out what.

yeah vista does a lot with permissions from what i hear... it could be that syncromagic has issues with the permission (or whatever vista calls them) and therefore doesnt work properly, there is always a chance that outlook does stay open even when it looks closed (check in task manager) maybe a long shot maybe some antivirus is using the pst file? checking or managing it?
not sure what else to suggest other than go back to xp...
Thanks

Thanks Steve.
Yes, I'm sure its bloody Vista. The damn OS is so dumbed down that you can't see what's going on half the time.

I'm finding that Vista doesn't "release" files straight away when an application is closed (Outlook for example). Just to be sure, try re-booting the source machine then do a synchronise to see if it works then. If so, then that's your problem.
