It's quite OK to shut PC's down now using the CASE power button.
At one time ie pre-2000 they would just turn off, (not good).
Now the off button is a "Soft" off so it will shut down properly.
I do it all the time.
BTW DO NOT hold the power button in while turning off, just press it and let go.
In XP,, sometimes this was the only way of getting it to shut down--:p
I quite like Vista,,
but its more an attitude change for me,, I was really anal with xp about changing it around so it did things and put things how and where I wanted,,
now I just let vista worry about it,,,,
and use a lot of shortcuts:D

I've had the said problem about shutting down with Vista so I did the only thing possible...take off vista and chuck XP back on it.
It is okay to turn off computer with external button as it shuts down correctly and means you can do it as your walking out the door. I know it wasn't with win 95, 3.1 and 98 but XP is fine to do so however I think Vista just puts it in to sleep and I could not easily find a way of changing this.

vista has the same shutdown bug microsoft have had since windows 98
no more no less... it is a part of the microsoft way of life.
vista is very nice on equipment that directly supports it..
upgrading an old machine to vista is not a good thing unless you are into self hurt...
i would add that IMHO, p35 and p38 chipset motherboards NEED to have the latest bios updates fitted as they are released by the manufacturers as they do have a marked affect on speed and featureset esp if you have gigabyte, asus or foxconn motherboards.
