Are you shopping for ease or budget?

Budget, Whirlpool - Australian Broadband News

Find one that'll send you out a router/modem combo rather than just a modem - easier to attach a second computer, etc. and firewall built in.

They should send it to you set up for them, but most of them it's just log into the router via web browser, type in username and password, usually email address or phone number, change the login password for the router and away you go.

For wired it should be easy as. Other thing is to get the router to your place, set it up connected to your computer with all of the above stuff, then take it to parent's place when adsl is switched on, plug, play, go away.

    Cheers
    Simon.

    Pedro,

I went through this last year for my parents who're in their seventies and who had never used a PC.

I bought a Dell online with a 22" WS monitor (so I could set the resolution for very large fonts) + a cheap printer/scanner/copier. Signed them up to my ISP (Netspace) so I could have the PC delivered to me for setup of the machine, e,ail, etc.

It all worked out well and I'm very impressed with the Dell.

Over the past 3 months I have installed maybe 6 systems for 'friends' - the provider (all of these were telstra) sent out the modem and a set up CD.

Out of the 6 none of the setups worked from the CD and a few settings had to be changed manualy - it seems that they made a mistake on the CD - but of course they will never admit it - and there usual response is "it must be a localised issue"

After saying that - providing you have all the right 'boxes' cables usernames and passwords etc., its really quite easy.

Remember you may have to call the provider to 'activate' the line before, during or after.

Typical instal including the wait on the phone to get the manual settings - and actually changing the settings 15 - 20 mins.
