anyone using dlink wireless

ok so here it goes............how do you describe a problem that you dont really understand yourself

i have a wireless network at home modem router......all my computers connect wirelessly to the network, well not all actually my xbox is hard wired to the router and so is one of my desktops as its wireless card sh*t it's self

so here is my problem

my laptop died the other week, and it has now been replaced with a toughbook cf-18.
i had no luck getting the toughbooks built in wireless to connect with my network.....not that i really totally understand what i'm doing, but i figured one of the reasons was my network is on g and the toughbooks intel pro wireless run's on b (now i have red that g is backwards compatible to b) but i figured thats why i couldn't get them to talk

so my old laptop had an airplus g adapter on it (dlink) which i realised i might be able to use on the toughbook, as low and behold it has to bus ports (or what ever they are called pcmia card something like that)...

so installed all the drivers.....plugged in the adapter. had trouble getting the adapter to work then i'm not sure what i done but after 40mins i got the adapter up and running

the adapter now works but keeps dropping off and turning on again
but when the adapter is on and you look at its info it says its connecting and waiting a key
so when i click on available networks and go to my network and click connect it comes up asking for the netwrok key. which i put in and then confirm by writing it again........BUT IT DOESN"T WORK.

keeps coming up with a message that i have to enter a 40bit or 104bit key or something and something to do with hexadecimal

I DONT UNDERSTAND

!!!!!!!

and when i kept going through the setup manual it says in the wireless settings to check the box that lets windows automatically get the settings etc......but when i check that box the wireless adapter wont stay on just pops up unable to connect to a wireless network

now i have just realised that no one will probably get what i'm going on about as i know i have been quite vague but maybe just throw some ideas at me before i have to pay dlink $40 charge to call them

oh and i forgot to mention that my network is secured with wpa key the setting that allows other comps to connect with the same password key

On some routers you can turn off the 802.11b service, if you're using a 'b' card, make sure it is turned on.

Sounds like it's time to change all of your passwords, good idea every once in a while.

Problem could also be the amount of power your laptop is feeding to the wireless card, some default to low-power mode which limits signal.

Could also be that when you installed driver it installed a wireless setup program that is conflicting with whatever you have been using.

Hi DB, I use a D-Link DI-634M wireless router.

If I read what your posted correctly, you're getting to the key part, but not able to enter the right key. I suspect that the notebooks Wifi isn't configured to the same WPA as you router. WEP uses a Hexadecimal key and also some WPA formats use a more basic key structure. If your key is a text string the you want WPA-PSK (Personal) and TKIP as your settings on the notebook.

Are you entering an ASCII key (normal alphabetic characters A-Z, 0-9) when the system is expecting hexadecimal (A-F, 0-9)? My Dlink router has an option to change between the two but defaults to hex.

it keeps asking me to type in hexa, but the card i'm using on the laptop is 'g' as i brought it with the router i have, and i have been in the card settings and made sure the wpa-psk is selected.....i know that this setting is selected in my router one because i set it up and two because i dont have any problems connecting my other computer or my itouch to the internet.....

and this card worked perfectly without a hiccup on my laptop that died, so i think it has to be the toughbook somewhere...

i dont recall windows in the network set up actually allowing me to choose wpa.......i have to do it through the card it's self..

i'll have another look!!!! when i get home from work

XP will do WEP and WPA by default, and WPA2 after a hotfix/drivers or SP3. Some cards will install their own management software with the drivers if they aren't natively recognised by XP, but usually you can switch back to allowing XP to manage it.

Also check the Toshiba support website for patches to the Toughbook and also the Wifi Card's support site for any patches to XP.
