Can I get my computers to talk to each other

I am on ADSL2+ and have a desktop PC connected to the modem via an ethernet cable. To this modem I have a wireless router connected that I use to connect my laptop from anywhere in the house.

With this system is there anyway I can gain access to files on one computer from the other - eg when I am sitting here using the laptop on wireless is there any way I can gain access to my files on the PC from the laptop and vice versa.

    Thanks

    Should be easy enough.

    Start>Control Panel>Network and Internet Connections>Network Setup Wizard.

If you're running XP it might be easier if you have Service Pack 2 or 3.

Easiest way that I have found is to share particular folders. Ie: if you have all your photos in a folder on your PC, right click the folder, click on "sharing & Security"

This will allow you to share only that folder so that it is accessable from the laptop. You can do this with as many folders as you like. This is the safer method, rather than sharing the entire c-drive.

On the laptop, you go to network and have a look in there. You should be able to see the folders on the PC.

**Now for the disclaimer - it is late, I am tired, and I am doing this from memory while sitting in bed. The above is the best I can remember without getting out of a warm bed, and going & having a look.

If need be, PM me, and I will give you some more detailed instructions.

Thanks Simon - i did this and managed to get the computers to see each other but not the files on each computer - in fact the folder and file structure does not appear - I assume I have to move files that I want to share into folders listed under each computer - thats fine if I know this in advance but I just want to access any file on either computer.

    Thanks

You have to go through the folder which you want to share, highlight them in explorer or my computer then right click and pick sharing, and you normally need to do that for each folder you want to share

I generally have one folder which I dump everything in that I wish to share, and just set that to sharing

Sorry bit of a duplication I didn't read the other post by Basil....- wasn't ignoring it - just didn't read it

Plus you may have to set up the network you have just configured to allow for printer and file sharing
