First thing to look for is add ins for IE.
Now I may get this wrong as I'm doing it from memory (and I'm using an iMac... much more reliable than both my memory and Windows)
Start by disabling them. Go to the Tools>Manage Addins>Enable Disable Addins
Disable all addins and see what happens.
Then go through and enable one by one. Testing to see how it goes each time.

Just start with none added. See how it goes, then just pick one at a time and each time see how it goes for what you normally would encounter time wise before it locks up.
