    Vista - SPDIF not working?

    Ok, ok...
    I think I've done something (that's helpful isn't it?). I know, I shouldn't be let loose with an abacus, let alone this...

    I was messing around with my audio settings and now when I select my SPDIF hi def audio device (set as default) the little green output level bars light up, and the system says it's "working properly" but no sound.

    Setting "speakers" as the default all is well (and makes sense), but I'd swear I got sound with the SPDIF selected before.



    Tried going back to "default" in settings and still nothing.
    Any ideas?

    check your mixer settings (near your clock or back in the main control panel for sound - sometimes they can be turned down. also try accessing the page you posted from the mixer. Try disabling the analog sound. Try a reboot.

    Might be a silly question, but you do have a S/PDIF cable (coax or fibre optic) connected from your computer to your audio receiver?

    Checked the mixer settings - levels ok, but the S/PDIF does not appear in the mixer window. Tried a reboot and System Restore yesterday. Checked in WMP - digital audio is selected.

    Now, how do I explain this, the answer to that question is.......no! And that's what has me confused, but - (and how many times has a user said this?) I am certain it was the default device and I was getting audio from it. If that's impossible, it must be brain fade and I need to give up crack!

    spdif is your digital sound output from your machine.
    it is possible to output both analog and digital audio at the same time.

    so how are you speakers connected? is it a round headphone style cable into a headphone socket on the back or front of the machine? generally the socket is green. if so you analog "speakers' output needs to be activated and default

    or is it a square optical fibre or round 'RCA' style digital connection at the back of the PC? if so you SPDIF needs to be activated.

    potentially if you are using analog, you might have plugged your speakers into the microphone input socket?

    No checked all that, definately only 3.5mm jack and definately correct socket.
    I can only think that I dreamt it and it was never selected as the default, so I'll just leave it as it is - it's not like I have no audio.

    I was toying with the idea of connecting my Zalman 5.1 USB sound card to this machine, as I've got all the speakers wall mounted, but each time it boots, it seems to "forget" the sound card is connected (perhaps because it's on a USB hub) which is a PITA so I might as well stick with the 2.1 sound.
