Looking for laptop

I just bought a HP Presario 793CU from Dick Smith for nett $499 after $150 rebate. It is a new model . JB Hi Fi have them also.
Good basic computer for surfing etc. The only downside is that you really need ADSL2 as it will download program updates for hours when you first start it. I was on next g so it used my whole month allocation in one day.
Has Vista home basic, and only trials of virus and Office, so you have to buy em later.
Its great to have all new stuff at second hand price as in my experience old stuff can give up and a disc crash in the boonies is not funny. Neither is a power supply fault after using a Projecta 12v adaptor, which caused me to have to buy the thing when my 18month old NEC would not turn on reliably.

One for Rilka for her birthday, and then a couple of days later it turns out I need a new laptop, too.

The above link is to a place in WA, Officeworks has them on special for a couple of hundred more, and if you bother then enough they'll better the price. My local place added the delivery cost from WA and took an extra 5% off.

The WA shop also has another Toshiba for the same price with 3 years warranty which also sounds like good deal. I just couldn't go at the 12" screen.

Since my old Toshiba Portege of 1998 vintage crashed, I would love to buy a new laptop but cannot afford one as I am a pensioner. But I have been looking at the new Dell with a 8.9 inch or something like that screen. The Dell has a spill resistant keyboard which is why I would consider this Dell.
If I could afford it I would buy one of the smaller Panasonic Toughbook Laptops, but they are way to expensive for me to even think about. If I could afford the Dell, which I can't, my idea was at home I would plug my slim LCD monitor into it [found this LCD monitor in a clean up day, and have used it for over a year--it works well except for a couple of days when it kept getting the shakes, but that shaking settled down] and use the built small 8.9 inch screen when out on the road. So I would not worry that the screen was too small for general computing. I would also use a plug in full size USB keyboard when at home. I do hitch-hike down to Sydney or Melbourne a couple of times a year, and am thinking of doing a Hitch-hike trip to Adelaide sometime in the future. I Hitch-hike with a large heavy backpack [full of papers that I wrote to distribute them to new areas, and these papers are heavy], and so I need a laptop that is very portable if possible that will not add a lot of weight to my backpack when I do one of these trips, and the 8.9 inch screen Dell is only around one kilo. If I get a heavier Laptop I would still do this, but would not be able to carry as many papers.
During the Pope's visit the government banned giving out papers at that time, so I hitched down to Sydney and gave out 3000 A3 size papers that I carried down to Sydney with me, papers of the type that government banned, because I believe in freedom of Speech.

Ive got a MacBook Pro and i love it to bits. I even have it out in the shed when tinkering. It really helps to have a colour wiring diagram on screen sitting next to you. But seriously this is the best computer i have ever owned. It hasnt missed a beat, the three PC's in various states of diasembly under my desk didnt fair so well though.
