I've recently switched from AVG to Antivir. The only problem was the nag screen that kept popping up. However that can be disabled by following the destructions at Disable the Avira Antivir PE Classic avnotify nag screen
After a number of issues with my desktop computer (Win XP) I have now done a clean re-install. All is OK until I reload AVG Free Anti Virus - no problems at first but on reboot the system says it has a trojan and the system then freezes - can do nothing. I have subsequently connected the drive to my laptop and scanned it with AVG on the laptop and there is no issue. I then remove AVG from the drive and reinstal it in my desktop and there are no issues until I reload AVG and then the system just freezes on boot.
There would seem to be some sort of conflict with AVG and Win XP SP3 on this computer so the easiest option is to put another antivirus system on.
So does anyon know of a FREE antivirus system available for download that is comparable to AVG.
Thanks
Garry

I know you say you want a FREE antivirus system, but everything in life is true, nothing is FREE, personally for the small investment - maybe $50 - $100 you get a real antivirus programme, with support, proper database updates and engineered to work with most OS's
.............and no more headaches,
Just my 2 pennies worth
what, like Norton? No thanks.
I have bought many different antivirus programs and I still think AVG free beats them all.
It is unfortunate that there is a conflict, I hope it does not happen to me now.
Thanks,
I have had Norton and Mcafee in the past and they are not worth the money particularly as far as subscriptions are concerned - I was ripped off by Norton big time.
AVG is a "real" antivirus program and has worked well for me up until now - the free version is just a cut down version of their expensive commercial system - it does have proper updates, and is engineered - Norton never worked as well as AVG did up to now - however like all software AVG has not been fully debugged before release (sounds like a MS product) - I have been on their forum and some people have had exactly the same message popping up but no fixes.
I will try to find and earlier version like I had before and install that if there are no viable free options.

AVG 8 is a pain. I now have scan scheduled for after I go to bed. Otherwise it consumes far too many resources and makes the PC unusable.

I agree with Hangover.
Avast is the go.
I have been using this for years and no issues. Free to home users, but businesses have to pay.

As to which AV software is best is like discussing which tyres to fit. Everyone has an opinion.
I presently use Norton 360 on 3 PC's as it was cost effective to by as a 3 user licence. N360 V2 is probably the best Symantec product I've used for robustness and footprint on the PC.
