depends on what you want backed up.
what is it you want to achieve when you archive ?
It's time to get serious with backing up so I bought an external Lacie Hard Drive but the software that comes with it is very basic.
I came across Nero Backitup.
Does anyone have a view on this product or alternatives

Nero have been around a long time, I would guess their product should be ok, but I know nothing about it.

On my network I have used Retrospect for, umm, 15 years. Pretty reliable and plays nice with various platforms and network protocols.

careful with your external drive too btw... i bought a maxter one touch 4 and on it's third use i smelt burning, so back under warranty and supplied a new one (there goes my backed up stuff) they wanted to charge about 1200 to recover it (yeah right)... got my new one after a couple months, about 6 uses this time and now dead again. Seems to be the powersupply though so this time round, stuff the warranty, just going to buy a new case and put the HD in.

You might want to look at the quality of your power supply. I assume you are filtering the power, or using a UPS?
But true about relying on spinning media for back ups. For me they are purely temporary. Otherwise everything important gets backed up onto tape, which is format shifted to newer technology tapes after about 10 years. That also provides an opportunity to dump unwanted data (what we think will be important now may not be in 10 years time).

I've been using Synchromagic for 10 years. Easy to use, scheduled back-ups and has a ton of options.
This program simply copies files based on their attribute stats. It does not compress or encrypt. It is excellent for the single user who needs to say back up his laptop to a server or networked PC. I also use it at home to "cross" backup our 3 PCs.
Cheers.
hmmm so can still backup to tape... thought that became obsolete... any quick suggestions on brands?

Tape backups are still definitely alive, expensive, and relatively slow.
We use them for part of our backup process at work, but I wouldn't normally consider them for a home user.
In saying that they are probably still the best solution for long term data archiving.
Back on the original topic though, as Incisor said:
For a start, do you need to be able to restore the whole machine, or just recover data?what is it you want to achieve when you archive ?
