Info on laptop charger wanted
In a council clean up day I found a lap-top thrown out with a paper note attached to the lid saying in part "key board does not work, use PS2 Keyboard and USB mouse." This laptop is a IBM thinkpad, i Series, with a Windows 98 sticker on it, as well as a "intel pentium inside" sticker also on it. I know it is a very old laptop, but I do need a laptop and cannot afford to buy one as I am a disability pensioner. It had a keyboard with it, but no mouse--already have a small USB mouse at home for my early Toshiba portege 2080 laptop that has crashed. No charger was with the IBM laptop that I found. Found a charger elsewhere and I am wondering if this can be used, hence this post. The bottom of this laptop says it is a IBM type 2811. And below this says 12V=== 2.4 A, which I know is Amp. The charger [AC adaptor] says "out put 12==0.6A 7.2VA." Please let me know if can this be used or not. Other AC adaptors should be easy to get hold of. I know a second hand shop has a large box full of them at a dollar each. The " === " symbol is not exactly the same as on the bottom of the laptop/charger but is as close as I can get from this Library Keyboard that I am now using. Thanks people.

The power pack you have found, while it appears to be the right DC voltage, will probably not be "heavy" enough ( ie supply enough current ) to run your laptop. I'm suspecting it's one of those small "plug in the wall" types, whereas a proper laptop power pack will be a bit bigger have a seperate lead going to the wall and then another one going to the laptop. So looks like you might need to find something else unfortunately.
It MAY work if you just used it to trickle charge the battery overnight, and then used the laptop till the battery ran down, but that's pretty inconvenient.
Another question is does the DC plug from the power pack fit your laptop ?, and is the polarity ( + and -) the same. Generally the + is the centre pin. It's sometimes marked on the power pack.

A laptop of that age won't have a working battery, or not one that will hold any significant charge, but the laptop should work fine with an ac adapter.
IBM's of that age all use the same power supply - 16v positive on the inside of the barrel, negative on the outside.
If you google the model number you should be able to find detailed specifications to confirm the power supply. You can try a smaller voltage power supply, as long it is a regulated power supply - ie, best to use a power supply that comes from a laptop. Unregulated adapters can provide more voltage which could be a problem.
It is easy to find repair manuals, etc. on Thinkpads, and they are pretty straightforward to pull apart and repair, the manuals are very detailed.
Up until a couple of weeks ago I was running a Thinkpad A21e, a P3 of a similar vintage, lovely, but slow.
Cheers

Realising your on th D.S.P another option would be a cheap in car one which you may be able to work with a power pack or something. I have no idea what you have laying around but you can pick the in car ones up for about $30
