Thread: iPod Question

I wanted to do this too.... Ended up with an external H.D. just for ipod. it's not ideal but it means I get to keep everything and as I had my ipod crashmore then once I was pleased to still have everything available to me.

Yuo can manually update your ipod to I think??? if your changing things a lot it would be a pain though.

AFAIK Sync'ing can only leave the iPod with the files its told about, deleting the ones not required. Have you tried some of the iPod forums?

Turn off auto-syncing of podcasts - that way you'll need to manually copy new podcasts onto the ipod as you download them but you'll be able to delete them straight away from the PC and they will remain on the ipod.

In iTunes select your ipod under devices on the left, then click the podcasts tab in the right hand pane, and unselect the "sync" option.

as you can understand, I'm trying to keep all the music and podcasts that I already have on the iPod without having them clutter up my computer as well

tomorrow I'll fire iTunes up and see if I can implement the manual update changes, otherwise transferring iTunes to an external hard drive (I've got one of these for photos) sounds like a good alternative

I'm just not sure where the music/podcast content is stored on the computer (It's not in the Itunes program areas) - I think it may be in "My Documents/My Music"....

Hmm, best description i can think of is like downloadable radio programs so you can listen to them when you want rather than just when they are on.

Way more to them than that though as it's not just stuff that's on the radio that is done in podcast form, there are video ones, programs on pretty much any/every subject you can think of available.

I use them a lot to listen to the BBC friday night comedy stuff etc from the UK for example.

Yep, My Music and then iTunes folder. In iTunes preferences you can set this to another folder, drive etc. I had it point to my network drive when I had a PC. I now back up the Mac's drive to that unit.

i was initially surprised by the quantity of quality content available for free!

Hey NM, you can download iTunes for free and have a look at the incredible amount of science/history/entertainment/education podcast content available, can be played back thru your computer (you don't have to have an iPod). An iPod gives mobility and convenience... great for whiling away long trips and sleepless nights... good for old people

Podcasts are great. I have not updated mine for a while as I don't have time to listen to them these days but I always enjoyed the ones off ABC about health, science, current events etc... because they often seemed to put more info on the podcast then they had in the show... I suppose it was uncut or something like that. I would often put them on a cd for clients if they had corrsponding issues because some of the information was invaluable. And if you miss something because your attention is elsewhere you just rewind and relisten.

Laurie- If you are having problems tracking down where they are stored an easy way to find them is just get one song name from your itunes list and go in to your search folder if your using windows in the startup menu and plug the name of the song in that and then you will get the "file path" that you canjust follow through my computer. if that makes sense?
