    If Range Rovers were computers...

This is pure bias on my part and prompted by a response to another thread.

    Range Rover L322
The latest high-end PC with all the fruit running Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit. It can do everything you ever dreamed of but will cost you a fortune to buy and maintain. You will get compatibility issues when trying to use non 64-bit apps (or 3rd party parts).
However, it will inexplicably fail for no good reason and give you meaning-less errors that probably aren't related to the problem at all.

    Range Rover Sport
Is it a iMac or a MacBook Air? It is definately sexy and who wouldn't want to be see with one? If any LR (or computer) can pull chicks - this is it!
It's practicality leaves a bit to be desired when compared to the "real thing".
It will still fail for no good reason, and you will be left feeling a bit empty and somewhat less cash-endowed before it is fixed.

    Range Rover P38A
This is the Dell Precision 490 desktop and Windows XP SP2 (not quite SP3) of the RR world. It is getting a bit dated now, but holds up well with the latest models in speed tests and durability. It has a few quirks that are easy to live with if you know what to do.
It will still fail for no good reason, and at the most inconvenient time.
Above all else, beware of water (oh, that's the P38A not the Dell. Maybe the Dell too).

    Range Rover Classic
Is like Linux running on a second-hand-PC. It will do most things as well as the newer models, and some better, plus there is a huge community of support of like-minded people. It is a lot easier to tweak and if you're prepared to do it yourself, it's costs are minimal.
Like all other models mentioned here, it will fail for no good reason. However, instead of bagging you, your peers will give you support and offer to help you resolve your problems.

Other LR models in no particular order:

    Freelander

Has to be a Netbook. Almost as good as a real one, but just doesn't have the grunt or hardware to keep up with it's bigger siblings.

    Discovery I and Defender
    See RRC

    Discovery 2
    See RR P38A

    Discovery 3
Although it has much in common with a RR Sport (but the D3 could never be called sexy), it is far more practical, and in capability terms it is more like a RR L322.

    Series LR's
Anyone remember VAX/VMS? Solid as, runs forever, but an uncommon sight these days.

Problem with hearsay..generally full of Ship.

Apart from Diesel and logbook services mine ain't cost me a cent.... I have had not one error or problem..just get in, turn the key on and drive in comfort..... just like owning the high end PC..can't really make a judgment on it till you have one..I think it is the pre 2006 models that suffered some grief but I wouldn't really know unless I had one

Unfortunately, I’m in agreement with Ron, the similarities are scary.

Every time I turn my key on, I don’t know what software glitch I’m going to come across.

Most of the glitches seem to be with the sound system but it’s still a pain in the haemorrhoids.

On one drive, the sound system kept getting louder and no matter how many times I turned the volume down, it would creep up again.

Got to where I was going, when I came back and drove off, all worked well.

Be driving along ( locally ) and there would suddenly be static in the radio, not enough to drowned the radio out but enough to be annoying. Same as above, next time I drive all is well.

Day before yesterday, couldn’t control the volume from the steering wheel, same as above, next time I drove, all is well.

About a month ago, I started off on my trip to Melbourne at 4am.

By the time I had gone a couple of hundred metres, the fuel gauge showed empty and the Tank Range showed ( --- ) and I had only fill the take the night before.

It came good after about 100 kms into the drive but it continues to randomly occur.

Drove off the other night with the Tank Range showing 42, with the fuel gauge on empty and the Trip Meter showing 914. I reset the trip meter every time I fill up.

I drove about 25 kms to the servo and my Trip Meter showed correctly the distance covered but the fuel gauge now showed just under half a tank and the Tank Range was at 490. NOT LIKELY.

Yep, Microsoft must have had a hand in the software in my 08.

The biggest pain is the TV, every time I go to use it, it has reset back to the UK setting and I’ve got to reprogram it to the Australian settings, which take for ever to do.

I don’t use the Nav much at all but so far it’s been faultless and no mysterious warning messages, but I always have the clock displayed in the message display, but every so often, when I turn the key on, the display is clear and I have to bring the clock up again.

I think ours is afraid of creepy things behind it in the dark........

Has developed a real passion for us checking the number plate lights, even though they've been replaced and function perfectly it still flashes up the warning every now and again when started up. L322 equivilent of getting dad to check for monsters hiding under the bed perhaps?

    Yep, sounds about right

Now where did that idea get prompted from

I've actually used a VAX/VMS system that had run for over 10 years since anyone had even looked at it. The whole IT group had changed in that time and we didn't even know it existed until one day someone said they needed the software on it upgraded. Hmmm I can't think of any car in that category... maybe a 2CV or Beetle?

    Paul ;

your heading says " if range rovers were computers" and in your listing includes , freelanders , defenders , discoveries and series L/R

I agree with the comment about RRC are a bit like Linux running on a cheaply put together PC with plenty of support .

A Series LR is not a computer. It is an abacus. Simple, fail safe, and anybody can learn to use one in 5 minutes.

Series 1 LR - Abacus, about the same number of moving parts and just as reliable in the right hands.

Series 2 LR - Commodore 64, a bit of fun for all.

Series 3 LR - Amiga, forget the mainstream American, go for user friendly.

RRC with 4BD1-T - Take the best bits from different computers add Linux, not affected with all the problems the big Ameican is troubled with.
