    UBUNTU/ XP ON HP LAPTOP

Laptop Guru's, i have my FIL's HP 6710B laptop that i'm trying to load Ubuntu on. Now this originally came with Vista but has since been deleted and replaced with XP (sort off), the XP install wasnt finished when i booted it up and it asked for XP SP2 CD. I dont have SP2 on cd but i have the file that i have loaded onto other pc's using a flashdrive but didnt work in this case, burnt the file to disk but that didnt work either. goal is to have a dual boot system but it seems video card driver/ settings are preventing this. Do the guru's have any idea's on how to get this thing booting. I am 64% thru dowloading latest Ubuntu 8.10 which i hope will have updated video drivers that will help.

I've got XP driver disks for 6710b and XP SP2 if you need them.
My offsider from work lives in Macleod so I could send home with him tonight (thurs) if you want. PM me if you want me to try and arrange it.

I'm assuming that the Ubuntu download will come as an ISO file.
You need to burn that ISO image to CD - not just burn the ISO file or it wont be bootable.
The machine should boot no problem from a Ubuntu CD - mine boots happily from many flavours of linux. Some have screwed up screen resolutions but they all boot.

I'm assuming that you already know how to burn ISO images to CD, and that you know how to boot the laptop from a CD.
Just ask if you want any more info.

PS - do you really need a dual boot machine? Most people nowadays just install the first OS (usually linux/mac) then start the second OS ( eg XP) in a virtual machine. Much more convenient than having to reboot the machine to get to the other operating system.

Hi Steve, latest Ubuntu had the video drivers so its installed ok now. Its the FIL's laptop and he wanted dual boot (not sure why) but since XP wouldnt install i did a full clean install of Ubuntu and fully updated it last night, wifi/ bluetooth/usb are all working happily so may leave it as is for now. I'll ask him if he really needs windoze and will contact you in regards to the discs - thankyou for the offer.

    regards,
    Nick.
