Laptop video card x1400 vs x3100

    Hi all,

I have an offer from Dell to replace my dud 6400 with a new 1525.
The deal is they try and give you something of similar spec although as the 6400 is 2.5 years old, even a base model is probably better than the 6400.

Anyway the 6400 has an ATI Radeon Mobility X1400 video card whereas the 1525 has integrated X3100 video.

Is the X3100 an improvement over the X1400?
Going purely by numbers you would assume so.

I googled for a comparison but no one seems to have done one. The age difference I presume.

The 1525 is better in all other respects.

The ATI x1400 is considerably faster, it's a discrete graphics card and has it's own memory rather than sharing the main memory with the CPU like the X3100 does.

Found a comparison between the 2 here
Notebookcheck: Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100

    Notebookcheck: ATI Mobility Radeon X1400

Really depends on what your using it for the X3100 would proberbly consume less power so you'd get a longer battery life out of the laptop but it wouldn't be as good if you wanted to play games on it. movies and the like would be about the same i'd say

Just another peice of info I'd say the Studio 15 laptops would be closer to the old 6400 they even have the current equivilent of the ATI card in them

Thanks distortion. I don't entirely know what all that means but the older X1400 certainly gets bigger numbers in the benchmarks.

I did check out the Studio 15 laptops last night. I agree that they are a closer match to what I have. I am going to put it to the Dell folks that I get one of those.

I priced up what Dell want to give me and it came to $1649.
I then priced up a Studio 15 with video card. I gave it a 9 cell battery and 7200rpm hdd (I currently have both of them in the 6400) and it came to $1765.

Given the price difference is only $116 I doubt they will complain. Even if I forgo the 9 cell battery (as it isn't covered by warranty anymore) it will come down to about $60.

That is pretty crazy given that for that near identical price you get another 100gig in the hdd, another 1 gig of ram and a dedicated video card. The wifi card is different but don't know how to compare and you miss out on the wireless mobile modem from Vodaphone.
