    New CPU - Now what

    Further to this thread http://www.aulro.com/afvb/computers/...-need-cpu.html

I've installed the new (used) 4200+ CPU and the machine is certainly quicker. Both the boot screen and XP System shows the new CPU.

The PC is still struggling to run Assassin's Creed although Device Manager says there plenty of memory and CPU spare capacity.

I'm assuming the issue is now the graphics card, as I'm using on board graphics and this MB GIGABYTE - Product - Motherboard - Overview - GA-K8N51PVMT-9

My question is, is there anything I need to do when installing the CPU, other than physically installing it?

    Cheers,

    Mark.

PS: Why this MB? It's from my Home Theatre PC where the goal is low power, low heat therefor low noise. Eliminating a separate video card helped and the on board graphic had no problems with SD TV.

If you are using on board graphics it will always struggle when playing games. The cpu is not your problem and there is little you can do to get around the graphics bottle neck other than addressing that.

yep, I'd get a graphics card, followed by more RAM - depending on what you have now.

I just googled assassins creed. The minimum specs are:

Processor: Dual core processor 2.6 GHz Intel Pentium D or AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+
    RAM: 2 GB
    Video Card: 256 MB

    The recommended specs are:

Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo 2.2 GHz or AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+ or better
    RAM: 3GB
    Video Card: 512 MB Card

So your CPU is just about there. RAM is cheap and you can pick up a quality 512MB vid card for around $200 - $250 depending on what your preferences are.

Putting the graphics onto the GPU should reduce the burden on the CPU and therefore fan noise.... you may find things will balance itself out....

    Have fun

    Pete

As per the other replies upgrade to a graphics card but also wondering if you have done anything with drivers. I have a Windows driver by AMD on my AthlonX2. Have a look at AMD's site to see what's current for your chip.

If you are using your PC for games but not Photoshop or Auto Cad you are ok using a graphic card without a switch on system.ini.

Remember that the graphic card use some ram for the mother board so you need to use a userav switch on system.ini for Windows to see 4 gib of ram!

Very careful again using this switch because some motherboards like Asus do not like it. For that reson Windows do not have the switch as a default on the OS.
    I love Intel based systems
    Cheers
