Thread: Laptop CPU

I've never seen a laptop motherboard where the CPU was socketed, they've always been soldered on. While not impossible to desolder and replace I'd say it's far beyond the capabilities of your average person!

I work for a largish computer company and we never change CPUs when they fail, we change the entire system board.

I have a pile of P3 IBM laptops, all of very similar model number - A21m, A21e - some have soldered cpu, some have removable.

Some do, some don't. You'll either need to take your's apart or find a repair manual with pics.

Oh, and you could probably find someone to desolder and resolder.

If the bios supported a different cpu.

For an older model it might be worth finding out first if that model came in different cpu speeds, then looking for a replacement motherboard with the appropriate cpu and replace it all.

There's no shortage of how-to's out there and motherboards come up cheap on ebay USA or Canada.

I would look at a new motherboard as well as a new CPU. The new boards are designed to run faster processors, and as such, your whole system will run better.

Ebay is our friend here.
