    This is correct.

Have you upgraded anything recently say in the last 8 weeks or so, a new graphics card, additional hard drive? In some cases a marginal PSU will drive the new gear for a while but the additional load over and above its capacity to deliver will cause accelerated failure.

The fact that you are passing POST seems to suggest there is nothing basically wrong until the PSU is asked to ramp up the power.

    nothing new,,,

I can try a different PSU,
it so happens I bought a "cheapy" while waiting for my "good one" to arrive,,

and yes Simon,, for reasons beyond me now I did install a 3.5 drive,,

have tried to boot with it disconnected

(Thanks for the help Inc )

oh,,, and is there an "easy" place to test the 12 and 5 volt rails?
other than jaming the probe into the connectors?

Unplug non-boot drives, usb accessories, see if it is a power supply load problem?

Edit - nope, I'll read the posts instead.

disconnect everything that doesnt need to be there, eg hard drives, floppy's, addon cars etc etc

make sure power and data cables off those things are disconnected as well

as well as ethernet cables etc etc

    Pedro Vs Gigabyte.
    Second and Final Round.

    DING!

A battered and bruised Pedro walks to the centre of the ring to touch gloves,, Gigabyte stands there with a look of contempt,, turns to laugh with a ringside fan--
Suddenly Pedro leaps across the ring and smothers Gigabyte with---

    BUBBLE WRAP!

a flurry a lefts and rights!
    a superb boxing exibition!
    and gigabyte goes DOWN!

    NINE TEN!

and its a win to Pedro The Swift!

    or is it?

    G'day,

I found the following info at: Hardware Knowledgebase - Award BIOS Beep codes - HardwareFAQs: powered by neofaq

The Award BIOS basically only reports either memory or video problems in its beep codes. Worse, the codes themselves sometimes refer to one OR the other item being the problem, or else it's the motherboard at fault.

    Beep code brief:
    1 Long Beep: Memory problem
1 Long Beep and 2 Short Beeps: Video error
Continuous Beeping: Memory or video problem
Any other beep pattern: Most likely Memory problem

If you can post your motherboard model I might be able to find the beep codes for your specific model. From the looks of things though, the Award BIOS (and Gigabyte in particular) are not very good at documenting the error codes.

So, based on this info I would:

Disconect all media from the motherboard (HDD, FDD, CD/DVD, USB ).
Remove all cards except the Video card
    Remove all RAM

    Attempt to start

If it works, try with one of your RAM sticks. If it fails the problem lies in the motherboard, power supply or video card. If you have spares (ie old hardware) try to change the power supply or video card and try again.

Also, does your PC have an internal speaker or are you connecting the speakers that you heard the beep with via the sound card? Most motherboards will have a connector for an internal speaker.

Let us know how you go and good luck.

    Cheers,

    Mark

I wonder what the turn-around time for motherboards is?
