XP Pro - changing registered user name

    Morning All

I have recently purchased a second hand computer. It has come with the original discs for XP Pro which has been loaded but not yet activated. But the previous owner has listed their name in the software - how do I go about changing it to mine. Then I also need to remove all records of him in the computer.

Prefer a simple response if possible cause computers confuse me at the best of times.

Does the ASUS VW192T screen need drivers to run - it works but the previous owner mentioned about down loading them - but as yet haven't been able to find where from?

Will have more questions as time passes as I'm trying to set this thing up - at least I managed to get my internet working

    Cheers Guy

    Hi Guy,

If you have the original XP discs, then I would strongly recommend a full format of the hard drive, and a fresh install.

This is particularly important considering it is a second hand computer.

Why? I am glad you asked. The previous owner may have unknowingly had a virus or trojan infect their system. This could lay dormant for ages just waiting for its trigger. You could then potentially loose everything that you have put into it.

I will never connect an unknown computer to my network without first checking it for a virus, and then it is isolated so that nothing can escape.

The added bonus of a fresh install is that you can set it up just how you like it, which is sometimes quicker than adjusting the settings that are already in place.

Thanks for your replies. The hard drive had been formatted and only the xp had been loaded i think this was completed the day before I bought the machine. There certainly weren't any documents on the hard drive. I have gone through and completed the 100 or so windows updates to get it up to SP3

    Hi Guy

No need to install additional drivers for the Asus monitor. Works fine on XP Pro.

    Cheers
