I can get 1920*1080 without drama on a Sony across a DVI to HDMI cable. A HDMI cable is really just a DVI cable with a fancy plug. The digital signal for DVI and DHMI is identical and since it is a digital signal, cable quality is immaterial as long as you are getting a signal.

You really can't improve the resolution of your screen beyond its' native resolution. If you have a LCD screen with a native resolution of 1360 x 768 then that all your going to get.

I use mythbuntu. I did set that stuff up but it was so long ago I think I've forgotten!

Actually ... I plugged in a Sony and it hated it with a passion // My video card is new.... So I don't know how you did it ;)

I have looked up the specification in the back of the manual

for its native pixel .... I quote from the book
PC Resolution (Optimum) .... 1920 x 1080 @60hz

This is the only reference to pixels in the "specifications"

I'm in Morley .... wanna have a look at where I'm going wrong?? :angel:

Mike, can you list the exact make and model names of your TV and video card.

I can bring my own TV pc around sometime Sunday to see if that works any better if you like. If so, PM me your address and we'll work something out.

I know you probably want to use 1920*1080 because you think the higher the resolution the better but if you are viewing your TV from normal viewing distances then you will find that resolution may be unsuitable for you because the fonts will be too small to read. ie there is just no advantage in very high resolutions when you look at something from ~3 metres distance because your eyes are not capable of discerning the additional detail. This is even more pronounced when your screen size is relatively small.

I'm not using this to watch TV or movies, It's being used as a monitor, I have it set 1.8m from my desk ... It might sound all big & glossy ... But it's all about putting distance between me and the screen and saving my eyes from being strained

1980 x 1080 might sound small ... but @ 1.8m .. it's not bad

Oh & Yes ... I read the instruction manual BEFORE connecting everything
Also I've rung up Samsung technical ... Now I have to wait 24hrs for a tech to ring me back, so I can ask some Q's

Any thoughts??

My graphics card is an antique FX5200 so your card should be fine. In the graphics adaptor setup I set the monitor to just a generic "plug and play" monitor with a screen refresh rate of 60hz.

Maybe check your settings - you might be using a too high a refresh rate. Does the VGA input work any better. Other than that no ideas.

The above settings work fine for me at 1920*1080.

I actually have that card in one of my retired computers ... still have the driver CD for it

VGA (PC) cable is no better

Will see how I go with some tech support ...

Any other ideas ... in the meantime???

If your old FX5200 has a DVI output then maybe you should try the old PC. You can easily get a DVI to HDMI cable from Dick Smith. If the old FX5200 works OK then a least you have isolated the problem to the ATI graphics card. If you do try the FX5200 then make sure you have installed the latest Nvidia drivers. It is unlikely the drivers from your original CD will work. I could not get full resolution from my FX5200 until I installed the latest drivers.

Also DVI does not carry Audio so you would need to hook up some audio cable to get sound.

If your old FX5200 only has VGA then it may be a waste of time trying, you may not get full resolution from a VGA cable regardless of whatever card or driver you use. I can't and Sony (my TV) specifically state in their operation manual you can't. Not sure if that is a limitation of VGA or Sony TVs.

Given you have tried a few different TVs it seems to suggest it is something at the graphics card end.

The input requirement I think is XGA to get HD so VGA is way off.

Mike, your card is PCI-E, is your motherboard a PCI-E compatible board?? This may or may not cause an issue. The card may not be able to render the image fully if your motherboard is older spec PCI graphics adaptor.

Yea ... I believe the motherboard a PCI-E compatible board

Motherboard is "Gigabyte" / Socket2 ... running a Duocore Intel Pentium chip
All 2 years old
2gig of ram DDR
The ATI Vid card is frggn huge man (brand new)

The ATI Radeon card is actually a overkill for what I want it to do ... but the controls are a nightmare to work out ... as there is a severe lack of knowledge to match the design of their products // Even the "How to install your vid card" does not match "How you actually do it" ...

I'm taking the Tower to the computer shop and try a Nvidia card called

PALIT GTS250 1024mb / 256bit / GDD3 / Dual-link DVI / HDMI
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Fabulous numbers and all very impressive terminology and the size of the card is twice the size of the ATI Radeon .... (I have some, but no frggn idea what it all means .... but hey ... it's big :eek: )

Rang up Samsung ... They have no real idea what their product does either :confused:/// Will have to demand to go to the next level of their tech department if this don't work
