    Thanks for the input everyone.
I've just been out to the Telstra shop, purchased a $30 prepaid NextG sim card, fitted it to the phone and after a bit of fiddling around with the bluetooth settings, I'm typing this on my laptop and posting via a bluetooth connection to my mobile.

Speeds seem comparable to my home connection and so far, I'm very pleased. No dongles, modems etc, just a phone on the table. Further testing in some more remote areas will be occurring soon......

I've bought 100Mb for $10. So no big downloads but OK for essential stuff while out and about.

you can very easily knock up $1000 in a month so be very careful . with the pre paid i assum it will disconnect when you use the 100m

Just a note, the pre paid is not bigpond so is a little slower. The coverage is just as good.
