this is exactly what I use mine for but my cheapy camera saves straight to JPG.

I mainly use the ozi on the laptop for planning routes and saving them to the mem card that I then stick in the GPS.

The EEE I have has built in WIFI and comes with everything needed to get network connections. every MCafe has wifi free and theres a lot of businesses with very poor network protection just begging to be leeched along with a lot of hotels that offer it up free. Best I've done is 30m from a maccas. I think the later EEE's also now have bluetooth

That wifi business is very attractive work on line eating Hungry Jacks outside the McCafe :D
I am looking at the ASUS Eee PC 1002HA on the we and runs XP
I can dowload from the camera to the PC as well just have to look which is the best method to save energy (the battery on the camera) then again perhaps a cheap inverter from DS or Jaycar is the best solution.

I don't download from the camera, if at all possible - especially when travelling - as this is the worst use of the camera's battery. You are best off getting a good small USB2 card reader. I use the SanDisk CF reader which is USB2/Firewire800. On the MacBookPro the FW800 is really quick and so the battey impact on the notebook is minimal, but even so the USB2 connection won't be too bad either.

The other thing I do is always format the CF card in the camera rather than deleting everything after downloading. This also saves on camera battery from what I have seen - anyway it pays to format your cards every so often.

Yes, I never delete the content on the cards, just format them and I use 2gb Extreme cards as well which have the capacity for 120 nef photos.

We ended up buying a MSI Wind. For us we needed something small for when we go caving, but in your case you may be better off buying a cheap 12" or 13" laptop. You will not have to carry as much around with you and the screen is bigger.

I put in extra RAM to max it out at 2GB. If you do want something small however, this is great as an on-road netbook and happily runs all the apps we need, including Ozi Explorer. I also bought an external DVD drive/burner so that only needs to be connected when required. As an aside we used it in Bali this year to check the DVD's we bought to sort out the duds. Saved us about $30 believe it or not!

The screen is good enough to use to check/review photos as well. The great thing about this is the keyboard which is nearly full size so typing is easy, unlike some of the other units around. Good luck with whatever you choose.

I use 4GB Extreme IV and Lexar equivalent and get 240 shots. Unfortunately when I get the FX camera I'll have to upgrade to a larger capacity cards again. Probably go for 16GB's I suspect and if I get the D3 (or its replacement) I can use 2 cards and over flow from one to the other, so the 4GB's may last a bit longer.

The risk in using large capacity cards is that you can loose a lot of data and you cannot go back on time ;)
I keep safe because I like to take shots in bad weather and there is when risk with humidity is involved.

Yes I have just been using a USB dongle. It is a Kaiser Bass that I bought from Harvey Norman while I was away for work so might be able to get one cheaper from other places. I have the HD TV only but I think the one that can still pick up analogue signal would be handy as HD isn't available everywhere.

Get yourself a small Pelican card case. They hold 4 cards and are water tight, light and not bulky either. I'm happy at present with 240 shots but if I get a higher megapixel camera with 14-bit non-compressed RAW then it's going to take bigger files.

They are the 'Land Rover' of laptops and have a cult following in certain circles. I have bought several out of the USA and wouldnt have anything else. Built to Mil Stds, touchscreen, backlit keyboards etc. Many have built in GPS with SIRF3 chipsets.

The fully ruggedised models to look for are the CF-28, CF-29 or CF-30 (still pricey). Ex USA is by far the cheapest with the most options. I compare each of above models to a D1, D2 or D3 - they all do the job well, the newer ones are a bit faster but more $$$$.

My current CF-28 with only a 1 GHz processor does everything I need perfectly. I dont know how it would go for video processing etc.
