    Hi There

I just purchased, after a lot of research and went for the ASUS Eee1005HA after reading all the reviews etc for your reasons i.e. service manuals, full GPS, internet via bluetooth mobile phone and access to RAM slots with external battery (given aftermarkets will come on line with three types).

I went for the 599 cost at WOW and then quickly sold the 2007 Office Student pack for 110 dollars that was a freeby at WOW ans onsold via ebay.

I really wanted the 8 hour long life Batt and 280 Atom processor but the extra 200 was not worth the performance difference and can I handle the cheaper removal battery given options later if needed (two low cost batts or buy a longlife version). I'm right into computers in desktop builds etc so if you start with this model as a basis and move forward from there you cannot go wrong. This one misses the bluetooth options so you just need to buy the mini half dome bluetooth dondle and leave plugged in to have all the options.

Unless your right into the ram configs etc, then the 2 gig option will not really make much difference at the lower end with the 270 and 280 processor range.

I hope this helps as a start for a cheap approach and you can possibly score one around the 563 market without the bonus at any good retail stores who appear to come so close to online price at the moment. The later is the 1008 which has some negatives with a lack of access to RAM and Batt areas.

got the asus EEE pc the very early linux version for $300. another $90 saw me picking up an external 320GB HD. (its only a 7 inch screen but thats all I needed)

runs ozi like a charm and theres some very cool other apps for everythng else available.

dont like 7 inch or linux?

no dramas it comes in the windoze flavor with a 10 inch for less than $1K and those versions have about 120GB Hard Drives. memory is DDR2 and is userchangable.

    heres the killer.

my now well and truely obsolete version with linux and bugger all hardware spec comes up to usable faster than the newer faster windows ones.

    hope that helps.

I bought an ASUS Eee pc 1000h about 2 weeks ago and have been really suprised with how it has performed. Comparing it to my full size laptop which is only 2 months old and a very high spec it keeps up with most tasks. The Eee comes with 2GB of RAM and a 160GB hard drive and as it is only runnning XP I have found it more then capable and fast enough.

I bought it to run in car for GPS and photo access on trips. At the moment I only have onroad GPS set up but will be purchasing Ozi and Hema maps for the offroad side. The Eee can run the road GPS software no problems at all and can run digital tv no problems. With how it can handle these programs I would say photo processing will be a brease for it as well. The only problem is they don't have inbuilt DVD/CD drives and a USB DVD/CD drive will be handy in the future.

The best part is I purchased the Eee new with a car charger for $550

If you are going to do much photo PP'ing in NX2 then I'd be looking at a better screen.

In my recent travels I noticed an awful large number of people travelling with eeePC's and HP, Dell etc equivalents. None of them were, that I ever noticed, using them for anything other than e-mail, web and blog work or for simply downloading pictures off P&S cameras and reviewing (no PP'ing).

I know this is in a different league but I would seriously look at a better 13" screen for the photo side of things. The MacBookPro I bought was a very, very good field tool for photography and has 7 hours battery life. There are 13" Windows laptops with similar quality screens.

The other thing to consider is what you save by getting a micro-notebook you often loose by having to then carry: USB hub, USB drive(s), USB DVD burner, Card reader(s) etc.

I have been travelling with notebook, portable and lug-able computers for almost 20 years and the 13" MacBookPro is by far the best portable I've ever had.

the EEE that Ive got supports external screen resolutions to 1900x1200 (hacked for movie watching reasons) and internal at 800x480.

the 10 inch version runs at 1024x600.

as per normal the higher you pump the resolution, the more it struggles.

the base EEE has 3 usb ports an SD memory card reader that supports (so far that I've tested) 16gb memory cards. Ive done a kind of drive replication deal on it so that when I plug into the network It can access and use the drives on the main computer I can use the Drives over the network like they were physically part of the EEE.

The idea is to download the images from the camera or the SD card into the computer using Nikon NX2 so the nef file is intact.
Only few of them will be converted to jpg for upload them on my internet photo page or blog keeping the nef original to PP at home on the desk PC
I guess that fro this job, Ozi explorer and internet I do not need something very sofisticated.
I have to see if NX2 runs on Unix other ways have to be XP which is what I have at home base. I do not use Vista

I am looking at the 1008HA and they are now down to 699 so its really a matter of model choice rather than price if you go for the ASUS.

OK that's pretty much what my neighbour uses his 7" eeePC for and he carries a couple of USB drives for storage. I think it would be fine.
