    depends.

I leave mine on auto manage and when the drive space is available it seems to hover around the 900MB-1GB mark on a machine with 512MB ram

on the 1GB lappies its currently running at 2GB on one and zero on the other (tho the second one lives in a permanant minimum power usage state)

I'd recommend auto-manage as well. The main thing is to have enough memory to prevent paging to virtual memory being a problem.

Dave if you can put another 512MB of RAM in that PC you'd notice a big improvement.

the formula was always 2.5 times your installed ram... auto managed swap files tend to fragment which can heavily impact a loaded system...

esp *.nix boxes but good for most windows boxes as well

there is a nice little utility for xp boxes called TuneXP oddly enough that helps set this and a couple of other useful settings with a mouse click or two

for what the machine does I dont really need it besides if the windows on it doest stop caffing me around its going to get the treatment and become a linux box and then 512mb would be more than enough hell I could probabley make it do what I need it to do on 512K
