Many thanks Remy
according to my daughter it's a Sierra wireless 310 sold as telstra's "prepaid" turbo. Her MBP is about 8m old and is running 'snow leopard 10.6.1. Any other data would be most helpful.
cheers
Hoges,
I have a Telstra prepaid Next G USB modem on a Macbook Pro and it does work!
I would persist with it and seek Telstra support as others have suggested. If you can provide any other info i can check settings etc.
Cheers,
Remy
Many thanks Remy

There is your problem. You need newer drivers for snow leopard.. None of my GSM modems work on 10.6 (resort back to bluetooth from phone handset).
At a sqeeze, she would be able to get an older nextg phone that can tether, and bluetooth to it form her mac as a BT modem.
But Telstra should support it. If they give her the run around, just get her to mention that if it isn't fixed THIS PHONE CALL, LIKE NOW she will have to take it to the Telecommunications Ombudsman. Its amazing how suddenly things can be done so quickly when it was previously so hard.
If she still has no luck the keyword is "not fit for purpose (as advertised)" and no matter what whinging they say she can get a full refund (as per ACCC).

Hoges,
Software is installed automatically and drivers are not a issue on Snow leopard.
When you insert the modem the MBP ask you to setup network preferences - click cancel.
Turn off Airport your wireless.
Go to my account in the Turbo connection manager and check the balance
Click on the internet icon and press connect.
Watch the status - does it say connected? do Send and Receive (Kb) now have values? If yes you are connected and the issue is with your browser settings.
Let me how you go with stage 1.
Cheers,
Remy

managed to contact her this evening. tried exactly as described but no go. Her understanding was that no login or password was required for th e prepaid...but it kept asking for same
so, we are closer, but still not there. she managed to contact the Telstra people on her mobile last Friday afternoon. They got an apple person on the line ...then both quietly dropped off the line leaving her stranded... says a lot about their lack of ethics (there's a 30 day expiry on unused credit which given she can't even connect is a nice little earner for Telstra) as well as downright lack of courtesy... seem to find that a lot lately...no-one wants to take responsibility...
When I worked for the International side of Telstra (originally OTC) we had a policy of the person who took the first call from the customer retained ownership of the call and kept following it up after it had been passed on to the relevant area.

It seems like they have had mac support for a while now.

Ah yes indeed! It would appear however that Telstra "wireless" is a different division from "Bigpond" although they both offer wireless solutions. And "prepaid" is a different animal again...the sierra wireless USB 301 + telstra s/w modems for the prepaid soution appear to be problematic with the latest Mac operating software Leopard 10.6.1 (which was supposed to "Fix" such issues...We are nothing if not resilient!
we'll see what today brings![]()
