    SSD

    For anyone building a new system or has a fast CPU and wants a speed increase, take a look at a the Intel SSD range.

    Pros: very fast i/o, no moving parts,very quiet

    cons: Still rather expensive per Mb

    These things in a Raid 0 configuration are bloody quick. boot times are hugely reduced, but choose wisely as the cheaper models dont offer as much of a speed increase as the more expensive ones. If you have an app that is very high in disk I/O these things are brilliant.

    There is a good write-up on SSDs in the December Australian Personal Computer. Read it before buying an SSD as there are some issues to be aware of.

    I still think they are far to expensive to be considered for home use.. unless its in a laptop then there are some definite benifits.

    Would be much better off running 2 32mb cache drives with 5-10 times the storage of 1 SSD with an equivalent price..

    I have an Intel SSD on the way for the laptop, as the current HDD parks it's heads on movement and really annoys me.

    This is even with a 4gb Intel Turbo Memory chip.

    I also run raid extensively on my desktop boxes, for both speed(games machine) and redundancy(video box).

    It will be interesting to see how the new Intel SSD performs when it arrives.
