Why do different browsers handle downloads differently?

I'm trying to download some waypoints from Exploroz.com which are .gpx format. No options are given where to store.

At home with Chrome, I can see the download happening of course, & it ends up in my documents. No probs there.

At work, using Crazy Browser over IE, I can't find where it goes. My little XP search doggy can't locate them either.

Yet using Firefox on the same workstation, I eventually found them in my user file on the network. No big deal now I know. But only the Firefox downloads, not the IE ones.

Just curious why they disappear into the ether with IE?

    TIA,
    Regards
    Max P

You can specify the default download directory that IE should use.
If you know how to use the Registry Editor, follow this link
Specify the Default Internet Explorer Download Directory at Registry Guide for Windows

You can change the name of the directory or location to something that you want.
Also, make sure you create the folder on the drive you entered as well.

    i.e. C:\My Downloads; D:\My Downloads

File search in Windows XP has a 'bug' but MS would probably call it a 'feature'. Search may not actually be working the way you think it works, that is, it does not find certain files because it does not necessarily search for / within all files.

You can easily configure XP search to work better, see here

Vista has a folder called strangely enough "Downloads" where they are kept.
