    Is something dying?

    Hi oh computer Guru's

    Recently my computer has start to miss behave....the thing has not missed a beat since it was built probably 2 and a bit years ago.

    However it now taking me one start up and one reset to get it going each time I want to use it.

    when I push the on button..I don't get the all systems check beep and just hear the fans running, it also just gives me a black screen. I hit the button to restart it and then usually it starts straight away.

    Sometimes when it has started I also get a frozen screen before going any further.....

    once up and running the comp is working fine, although tonight it took 5 attempts to get the bloody thing on.

    Do I possibly have something dying? I'm due to put new microsoft updates in but that's only for explorer8 and nothing else really relevant stuff for office that sort of thing..

    Compture was scanned this evening by AVG and nothing was bought up

    Ideas??

    What sort of computer?

    My work laptop (little Acer) had a similar startup issue and to rectify it I had to download some bootfiles and start it from a memory stick. Three or four of our Acer laptops have now done the same thing.

    It certainly sounds like a boot file issue.

    its just a built desktop pc with an asus motherboard does that help???

    power supply has taken a hit or two and is low on the main 12v or 5v rail would be my first pick.

    Agree with the power-supply diagnosis.
    Just a thought, you don't have a heap of USB stuff hanging off it do you? By that I mean external drives and other USB-powered devices.
    I have had similar problems, and when I took the machine back to bare-bones it all worked. By process of elimination, and plugging things back in one-by-one, the external USB storage drive was isolated as the culprit.
    Now I make sure it is unplugged when I start the system and (touching wood here) haven't had the problem recur.

    I'd agree, power supply. But before you rush out and do that try replacing the button battery on the motherboard (probably, but not always, a CR2032).

    reseat components

    Hi,

    Just before you spend anything try reseating all the components - pull the ram chips out and pu them back in, same for all the other components including the video card - also when it's up and running check the event log for errors.

    Please before you do anything, make sure all your data is backed up, its probably not the disk, but its better to be safe.

    this maybe an idea I do have a few things hanging off wireless mouse, wireless keyboard external hard drive although always turned off... and my tablet.

    in regards to the power supply taking a hit....how would this happen? surges through the system in storms etc? I do have the comp plugged into a surge protector..

    as for the pull it all apart put it all back together...i'm not sure i'm brave enough for that..thats why I had inc build it in the first place

    can I put a multi meter on the power supply if I open up the side? if so what would it need to be connected to..

    Oh hang on i'm not sure i can power computer up with out the side of my server case on I think I remember it not booting up when I first got it due to the side not being quite in.
