Disco backfired this morning on gas :( What to do?

There must be heaps of info on this already but I'm going to ask anyway because I just wanted to get an idea before I went searching around the forum.

My Disco has been running really well on gas and petrol from the first day I picked it up...all of two weeks ago This weekend I noticed it started running a bit rough on gas and this morning it gave me a backfire at a low speed so I switched it over to petrol to avoid anymore, thus confirming my suspicions that gas wasn't running properly.

I've been meaning to check the ignition system because I heard you've got to keep them top notch for a gas running V8 but only having the car for a couple of weeks I haven't done it yet. Hopefully I didn't just blow an air filter!

Where do I start here? Should I just replace the coil and leads straight away or make sure everything is connected properly? I was thinking of replacing the coil and leads just for peace of mind anyway because I don't know how old they are and they are the first thing to mess with gas in my past experiences. I also heard of things called ignition amps...don't know what they are though but I guess they must have something to do with ignition haha funny that

Just looking for peoples thoughts on this so I can get it sorted and so I can have total confidence in my ignition system for gas

Open the search section and have a look.
There are many posts on here relating to this.

I would firstly check for leads touching, timing being out which I from memory think is 10 degreeBTDC.
Also there are special Bosch plugs for gas etc.

I am no expert and am sure there be answers and or help soon but seriously, have a search. Much will be explained.

I have and I've already found some things, I always like to start something semi-fresh if I have a problem though I figure it's probably a common enough problem that there will always be people up for talking about it

    Order of service:

    1. Replace worn plugs, Bosch WR7DC+ or NGK BPR6ES as recommended.
    2. Plug gap. Set to 0.7mm/0.028"
    3. Timing. Set to 10 degrees BTDC
    4. Plug leads: Separate plug leads to 20mm apart, re-route if necessary.
    5. Replace with Bosch or Magnecore leads if they are old leads.
    6. Fix any air cleaner faults caused by a backfire.
    7. Find the idle mixture screw. Set to best idling speed. (PICTURES REQUIRED for further advice)
    8. Coil replace, suggested Bosch BIC290
    9. Amp replacement as per posts on this forum.

Should keep you busy for a moment or two.

    10. Getting running and offload it to some one else and get another Disco before this one sends you broke.
    11. Don't sell it to any one you know

Sorry, but after all the problems you have had in it's short time of ownership it might be a very good idea to part with it.

This is a test of manhood, masochism, or true grit Land Rover ownership, I dunno what.

I thought this stuff was just typical Disco behavior and pretty much all Discos would have the same kinds of issues

Ah not really, there are good ones and then there are lemons. That's why it's important to have them checked by a Landy expert before purchase.
Regular maintenance is the key, neglect it and problems occur. If the previous owner didn't look after it then you might be the one that's getting the end result.
Hopefully your issues will be sorted out and you can enjoy your Disco.

There's nothing on my list that's hard to do, stop when you have fixed the backfire. It just costs money to get back to a good state of tune.

Well that all sounds like stuff I can definitely do...apart from the 'selling' bit because I like this car and I'm keeping the faith for now

The only thing I'm lacking is time to do it all. It actually only started happening after the really crazy wet weekend we just had so I wonder if water has got in anywhere where it shouldn't be. I've also noticed that the petrol tune is out as well so it's not just on gas but petrol at least runs okay still and doesn't backfire. The backfire didn't sound too nasty so hopefully didn't do any real damage but I've heard they can wreck stuff

Fingers crossed, I'll see what I can turn up.
