I was going to drop the resonator (the little one down the back) off once. The guy said it would increase the noise inside the rear of the car , a drumming sort of noise he reckoned, so I didnt do it.
Probably should have tried it I suppose...

I ran my d1 for over ten years with NO mufflers,,
yes it was loud!
yes it increases fuel useage,, only because you want to hear the noise---
start without the centre,, just pipe it. The rear resonator will keep it to a dull roar,,

I know a bloke with a really good performance exhaust shop in Capalaba - does a lot of well restored US muscle cars. He tried to do a new 3 inch pipe and muffler and resonator that was meant to all be quite free flowing but not loud. I started it when he had finished at it was INSANE. I drive up the street and he stood there just shaking his head. It used to start off from the lights and people would look around looking for the ozzie muscle car and not finding one looking confused. Took it back cause I just cant pass myself off as 17. He said he couldnt believe how loud it was and had thought about it and reckoned it had to do with the engine being all alloy and putting out more noise than a steel one. He then changed the resonator and muffler to a more packed one but still good flow and the note was then very close to stock but better flow. I really like it now and its very liveable.
Be careful what you wish for cause there seems to me a big gap and no midway point between quiet and throaty to outright insane.
Cheers
i got a new muffler put on the centre, the original one was big heavy and crap, the one i got put on is a almost straight threw but its quiet at idle but boot it and you will hear it. its great for when i tow doesnt drown just sounds sweet. total cost $90 fitted. oh i went in to get a straight pipe but got a call to come back and listen to it was waaaayyyy to loud.
My RRC has a twin system (1 5/8 pipe from memory) with straight through "mufflers". It is properly loud. If I drove it every day I would have to make it quieter, but I usually only see it one week out of every four so I put up with it (enjoy it!!).
I decent shop will be able to fit you out with a performance muffler that will sound good but not get you into too much trouble with Mr Plod providing your careful. By the way you need a resonator otherwise the low frequency drone sound will give you a headache. Coin permitting replacing OEM pipe with 2 1/2" would be ideal.
My Disco has the rear resonator removed and replaced with a straight piece of pipe. it was done by the previous owner cause it was dented i was told.
I cant give an accurate comparison between with and without, but i can say its very quite in the cab still, it not loud at all.

I have had the rear unit off for years now,, I've never noticed any "drone", and its not got a loud note at all,,, does sound quite good though,, (of course it does, any V8 does),
As for the guy going off about noise,, if he wants a quiet car, he should get himself one,, and not worry about what you want on your car,,
So the front unit on mine is going to need replacing soon, (rust), so I have similar problems,, as in which way to go,, A twin system has a better note I reckon, but people say a 3" is the way to go. So I guess it's a compromise between economy and "noise likes",, I guess if I was overly worried about fuel, I wouldn't have a V8 to start with,, so then, just need to work out whats the best sound,,![]()
Mine had Hurricane headers from Liverpool Exhaust and a full 2.5 inch system with a res and a muffler.
