I have just installed a conventional LPG system in my D1. The three scuba tanks (the ones for Ford) are fitted on the rear cargo floor and have a carpeted shelf made over the top. You can fit quite a bit of recovery gear around the tanks under the shelf out of the way. I when the tanks in the back as I wanted to extend my range for trips away and not have to carry gerry cans and keep the 80L fuel tank.

I don't notice the difference in power and runs very smooth on the conventional gas system. I have gas injection on the wifes Holden Frontera and have had problems with two lots of sprint gas injectors failing and still doesn't run as good as petrol.

If you still want some pictures I can take some tomorrow if you want.
    Cheers, David.

Funny how high tech is cool but potentially unreliable. I have only fitted 2 sprint injection systems and one has killed an injector at 70 000km. And tuning them involves access to someone with the software.

I strongly suggest when you get a gas fitter you tell him to get an AMR brand gas mixer, part number M352 or M353. This is positively the best for the 3.9/4.6 engine with the 72mm throttle housing. Again, look for second hand systems, you can get tanks tested and save up to $1000 on new stuff. There is even a twin tank bracket on this forum, I was going to buy it but I don't have a use for it at the moment:

    LPG options

    Hi Brenno & All,

My D1 V8i was converted to gas a year ago, with twin underfloor tanks located between the rails with minimum modifications, bar an extension for the sway bar mounts. The vehicle is lifted, so no real loss in clearance, which would have been an inch or so anyway. They hold around 75ltrs and give me over 350km per tank. I also have a 30ltr petrol tank. We lug jerry-cans on big runs. The boot space and two jump-seats were needed.

Sorry to take this backwards for you, but I have sequential vapour injection. There is no loss of power and it sounds great! I chose it fearing backfire, which can do major damage I am told (not the best if out bush).

There were some issues with the ignition system. After losing an amp and having the petrol cutting in randomly, when the engine got a tad hot, I change to BeeUtey's Bosch modification (last week), Magnacore leads and fancy plugs and she fly's.

Cost a bit, but loving it now!

Thanks for the input mate. Will do a little more research and costings on everything to see what the most viable option is.

Thanks mate. With the money savings, I could get some lockers... Wonder if I can get that past the missus.

"Honey, what are those three switches for??"

"They're just for the gas my love."

I have a similiar set up to Adrian. Gas injection with underfloor tanks and 40 lt rear quarter tank. For me I wanted to keep all of the space in the rear cago area as it is already too small as is to fit camping gear. Fitted by Deacon Auto. They accomodated the body lift I have and moved everything up into the empty spaces. It did cost a few $$$ but has been extemely reliable and the only time I can tell a difference between the fuels is when I'm paying to fill up. It all depends on how long you intend on keeping the ca as to which conversion you use.

My D2 manifold tanks would not fit in my D1 but then again my D1 cage sits in there. If the cage was out it would. You must be able to get them if people have them, but my D2 ones and so big that sitting right on top of my cage in the D2 the solenoid cover only just fits with an inch or so to spare when my tailgate closes.

    Cheers

The APA manifold tank is a squeezy fit unless you shorten one of its back legs and redrill it. Then it fits in with a cargo barrier. The Manchester one is built with a different back bracket, fits better, but its control box sits 20mm higher than the top of the tank. Great design .

I had to cut the bottom out of the cargo barrier so the Manchester tanks fitted in but no big deal. looks neat.
