Also check the front prop shaft uni joints, under load thy might know if the are shagged.
hay guys im pretty new here iv got a 97 tdi 5spd disco took her out today found some puddles and a little mud anyway she got pretty deep in slippery mud so i engaged l4 when i put it in l4 all wheels were spinning but had a decent knocking noise sounded like was from the drivers side front i assumed was front diff but then it went away after a minute or 2 and didnt come back... now i no my way around cars but never been into 4x4s.. so if its a diff its no big deal but the question i have is there a common prob with these diffs (may have even been from transfer case as its hard to tell) also iv heard of people having issues running big rubber on disco's iv got 32s could this cause an issue with the diffs?.....

Ditto!
Mine developed a vibration and, when stripped out, two of the four roller bearing sets in the diff. end uni. were missing! The other two were shagged. Interestingly, there was bugger all movement from the shaft when 'checked' in place.
Make sure you replace them with greasable joints and you should be right!
