    Disco series 1 Cooling

    Hi,
Has anyone out there had a similar issue with the plastic header tank/reservior on their disco. My plastic tank is leaking from the seams where it looks like it has been pastic welded from the factory.
Can these be repaired or should I just get a new one?

    Cheers Luke..

The original black ones are known to leak at the seems and sometimes completey split.

As Bee Utey says, get one of the after market whitish ones (around $65). They are better than original.

Yes, You have to change it.
The water level mark is in the middle. Do not overfill it!

I hate to be the bearer of bad tidings but just be aware that it could be a blown head gasket pressurising the cooling system that caused the tank to split.
I recall about a year or so ago someone fitted several new tanks before finding the underlying problem.

But, Philip, could one expect the pressure cap to let go before the tank split?

It should do, but since the new tanks don't include the cap, it is possible that a faulty cap can be reused on the new tanks

Thats why you replace the cap at the same time, blown h/gasket could cause them to split but with the D1 the black tanks are known as a weak point so i wouldnt go all doom and gloom just yet.

I know I am tempting fate but my black tank is a 92 original and 194KK and no probs. It does not happen to every tank.

I would still check with a sniffer after having cracked a tank and as said replace the cap..

Sometimes the tank crack can be produced by overfilling the system.
When pressure goes up, the escape from liquid coolant trough the cap valvle (a it is intended for air) is insufficient. Then the tank can split in its weak point.
Do not overfill is an important recommendation in this case.

    Regards
