    tdi v V8

    Hi All,

I have been looking for a while to swap my V8 disco for a tdi, the only reason being that 85% of my driving is on the highway now, i cover around 7 - 850 kms a week, as you can imagine my fuel bill is quite high, i recently got hold of a freelnder 2.0td which is brilliant on consumption compared to my V8, the only probelm i have is i'm a disco man, the freelander just doesn't do it for me.

I have found a 97 tdi auto with a bit of work needing doing, ie front electric windows not working and cleaning up inside a bit, is it worth the hassle changing over to save on the fuel costs? i have seen posts on here saying that they lack power

My old V8 got 360 ish k's to the tank. I put up with that for 10 years.

My new (1994 Tdi) Disco gets over 1,000k's on Diesel/LPG. I wouldn't swap back if you paid me.

    My 2c.

    That's say, 2 tanks of fuel to 1 ... and at say 70litres @ $1.40 per litre = $98 x 52 weeks = a saving of $5096 per year

    Power?? ... Ask Tombie2 for a tweak

    That'll need a TD5, not a TDI.

Another thing is noise. even with road tyres, the engine itself rattles away like mad. you get used to it, but not the most comfortable sound to be cruising with long distances with. Make sure carpets are in good nick and it has a decent set of speakers and CD player or something to drown out the drone

Better than 10l/100km in a 2tonne truck though makes up for the noise and lack of power

You can fit LPG enhancement to the diesel, that fixes the power problem quite satifactorily. And saves about 10% on running costs.

    Hey mate
Not sure where you are but if in SA, I be happy to let you drive my Tdi with gas.
Always been a V8 man also, now I am definately not going back down that road.
Power not the same but O.k and the economy is just amazing.

Go do it and have a holiday twice a year from than on from the savings achieved.
