Thread: 300 tdi rear main oil leak

When you changed the rear main seal did you fit new T seals as well to the main carrier? These become brittle with age and it will leak from the sides.
Also you could have damaged the main seal on re fitting.?

CAUTION: Do not lubricate oil seal or
running surface on crankshaft. Do not
separate protector sleeve from oil seal and
do not touch lip of seal. If protector sleeve is
removed or seal is inadvertently handled, it must
not be fitted as the coating applied to the oil seal
during manufacture will be destroyed and oil
leakage will result.

If you remove the console and un rivet the transmission tunnel cover plate under neath, you can remove the Transmission and Transfer with your engine by attaching a chain to it , undo the transmission to engine and lower and move rearward. you will need to put your car on stands to allow you clearance underneath. Just have the crane arm enter via passenger side door. May sure that it's all steady so it doesn't swing and damage your dash.

Myself, i would move the engine forward enough to get to the seal , i also replace the clutch the same way- much easier than removing box and transfer.

oops i greased it and didn't replace t seals i didn't know about them . there was no instructions with seal and gasket . o well looks like the engine is comeing out so i can try again

The T seals can't be fitted without dropping the sump and removing the rear big end bearing cap. The T seals sit either side of the rear big end Bearing cap
If you haven't bought a Rave manual get one, it explains things better with diagrams
