My thrust bearing used to make a noise after I started the Disco. I thought that noise was the starter solenoid sticking and the gear was still spiining.
When I put the clutch in it was not as noticable, and when the engine was warm it seemed to be less obvious. Later on taking off on inclines from stop also made whirring noises. When I replaced the clutch I found the thrust bearing was all chewed up and the nylon carrier that the bearing sat in was all melted and on it's last legs. I was suprised it even had lasted that long

I've checked the link. Mine is there all the time, regardless of engine temperature. Also, the link mentions a rattling noise. I guess mine is kinda like a rattle, but if I were to choose, I'd say it's more a grinding type of noise than a rattle. Additionally, it says there that these are symptoms in a diesel engine. Mine's a V8.
    Ops!
Then, I'm afraid it is a worn input bearing in the gearbox.
Some mates here do replace all bearings and it didn't cost so much, because the gears are seen usually ok.
If you don't replace it, it will go worse, and you can loose the gear as the play between input axe and main axe becomes too great.

Sorry for my spelling. My language is spanish.

    Regards
