Best mount is one of the steel units which have a quick release clip rather than the plastic one it just pushes into. Less chance of the extinguisher becoming a missile in the event of an accident. I had mine mounted on the front side of the cargo barrier.

The Mag lite is easy I have my 5d cell sitting between the drivers seat and the console, no fitting required and very easy to get to. Don't put the fire extinguisher on the cargo barrier because if the Disco's packed to the hilt you won't be able to get to it in a hurry. And don't stick it under the bonnet like some people do.

We have ours mounted high up near the roof line behind the cargo barrier. No way would I put the extinguisher down near my feet or anywhere it could become a projectile. If I can't get to the extinguisher because of injury or damage to the vehicle I very much doubt I'll be too concerned about fire.

I believe an extingiusher will fit to the driver's seat frame on a D1 between the seat base and the closed door......very close to hand when you exit the vehicle and with the added bonus of being out of the way whilst driving etc. Won't fit there in a D2 dammit

I have my 4D Maglite mounted there using the two proper Maglite clips. Fits nicely but you can only get it in or out with the door open.
Will only fit there in a 96 or earlier Disco so your in luck.

I did have a fire extinguisher, maglite and shovel mounted on the rear door. I had the fire extinguisher mounted upright in the top left corner with the maglite mounted beside it on the maglite brackets.

I had some spare maglite brackets and I mounted these along the bottom of the door and found that my shovel fitted the brackets also.

Found this setup handy as when you opened the door they were right there.

Massive thanks for your suggestions, keep them rolling!

It's just a temporary install for the time being, but I installed them on the inside of the cargo barrier...access has proved very easy and they're definitely not going anywhere in a hurry. Here's some pics anyway.

That's precisely what I chose NOT to do. They are nearly perfectly in line with the back of your head and that of your passenger with very poor retention. They will both fly forward if you have a front on accident. Seriously dangerous IMHO.

Serious concerns about the mounting of the extinguisher....looks like a plastic retention strap and the proximity to the passenger's head is critical. It would appear that you have solved the issue of articles flying around from over the back with the cargo barrier, then re-introduced it by fixing the gear on the inside of the barrier in that manner.
Sorry, not wishing to sound harsh but it's a worry.... but then it's your vehicle after all.
