    Baby seat install - 98 D1

    Hi Guys

Just wondering if anyone can offer some advice on installing a rear facing baby seat in a D1. I had it installed in the centre rear seat no probs because i could manually tighten the lap belt but i don't have this luxury with the retractable side belts. The missus was not keen on having the seat in the middle because she could not reach in to get the baby.

In my Subaru, if you pull the retractable belts all the way out they change mode so that the belts cannot loosen until fully retracted. This provides the lateral stability for the baby seat. Doesn't seem to happen in the Disco.

To overcome this i have just jammed the front passenger seat back against the baby seat so that it cannot move around. Surely this is not the recommended way? (although it does seem effective). I doubt it would work though when i have the baby seat forward facing and i jam the babies legs into the front seat!!!

    Thanks.

You can use the metal clip (Don't know what there called) that goes around the belt and pulls to the side and turns the belt into a lap belt. They come with the harness you use for booster seats and can be brought separately. Don't have any pic's of them.
    Is thats clear as mud?
    Cheers, David.

You might need to have another look at the instructions for fitting the seat. I have not had any problems with using the standard retractable seat belt through the base of the baby seat in either our 2002 Camry, BA Falcon, D1 or forester when we had kids in seats.

Are you using the rear anchor point as well? There are three points on the roof in the rear cargo area (one for each back seat) just above the back door where you can bolt anchors into for baby seats. IIRC these have a platic trim cap screwed into them. The strap from the front of the baby capsule then attaches into one of these and the seat belt holds the base. In the event of an accident your seat belts are inertia belts and lock up so no movement. (But I did pay a fair amount of attention to making sure I had them as tight as possible to try and lock the inertia real)

Hi Glenn, congrats whens the baby due ? I have had a seat in both the middle and side seats no problem, i guess it depends on the type of seat but usually the seat belt loops thru the base of the capsule and then you just pull the belt tight untill it sort of locks in place.

I know what you mean, its a sort of double C clip, pretty sure i have one floating around that i dont need since my eldest is out of a booster now and youngest is in the forward facing seat still.

If you haven't got one , any baby seat installer will have them.

Why, I was able to get a rear anchor even in smalltown Gosford.

I concur, get a pro to look at it cos we certainly didnt have any probs. Also, I wouldnt be using the front passenger seat to lock it in as this could add the problem on a colision (front seat becoming a weight if hit from behind).

Middle mount is best.... bugger the missus, the kid is safer.
The points for the child restraint anchors are in the roof at the back door (series 1 Disco).
Mounting the seat ( rear facing) will be fine with lap sash as long as you tension the the anchor belt CORRECTLY!!!!

We have 3 grubs & plenty of practice at them, howver I beleive that all Ambo stations should be able to fit them for you..

Thanks for the input guys. The child restraint anchor above the rear door is not a problem. Thinking about it, all i will need is the double C clip think which will stop the retractable belt from loosening. As said, i don't know why these are not included with the seats.

G'day Nick - Zach was born 30 March so he's about 5 weeks old now. Growing up very quickly.

I fitted the baby seat in the middle of our Disco. It is a much safer position in an accident plus you can still take two rear passengers easily. My wife doesn't like it though.
The clip mentioned is part of the seat on ours I think.
