    Thumbs down Is it just me or ??

    Hi to all!
    I own a 98 Disco TDI with abs brakes.
    Firstly, there is nothing wrong with my brakes, they work normally. However.
    I just had a reasonably bad stack on a muddy and slippery dirt track, mainly because of the abs brakes.
    I came over a small hill and started to go down a slope at about 25 or 30k?? and when I touched the brakes to slow down a bit and "I just had nothin!" No brakes at all! The ABS began to work God help me!
    I tried taking off some pressure but it was useless. It didn't matter what I did brake wise, I had nothin!
    I threw it back to 1st but it was all a bit useless. I swerved to miss a car stopped in the middle of the track at the bottom of the hill and hit a big tree.
    Now, anyone can say it was because of bad driving but honestly I don't think I would approach the situation much differently (if the brakes worked). I am not a novice driver and quite experienced as a driver and as an offroader.

    Has anyone else found that the non skid brakes have added to a bad situation rather than made it safer??
    Is there anything that can be done to improve them??
    Personally, I think they caused the crash and if I had old school brakes, I would not have crashed imo.

    is your ABS working though...
    when my ABS was playing up I had a lot of trouble pulling the car up!!

    It was extremely hairy on slow steep down hill stuff..

    I still cringe now when I go down stuff if I have o use the brakes thinking its going to do it however hadn't had a problem since changing two wheel sensors
    Our Land Rover does not leak oil! it just marks its territory.......

    Well, all I can say is on the tar it works fine, I have had no problems. Even that day, before the accident the abs cut in at one stage and went off as I was going down a hill very slowly, as it should of, so I think the answer to your question is YES!
    It does have a "spring sound' when it works. I imagine that that's normal.

    There is a time and place for ABS but I won't buy a car with it until forced to. Having learned to drive in sand and mud and slippery slop I know I prefer the brakes to be under my control only. Maybe I'll have a monumental on the road one day but not having ABS has saved me more times than I can count. Keep the ABS for those who can't drive sideways.

    Yea this is how I'm feeling now too.

    I am thniking of putting a switch somewhere on the dash where I can switch it on and off at will rather than having to take a fuse out.
    Surely I can't be the 1st to consider doing this??

    Just restating what I said i an other post.
    I pulled the 30amp ABS fuse out when I went bush last weekend and the brakes were great. They were much more predictable and I had complete control over what I wanted them to do. They worked just like a normal braking system. I put a blown 30Amp fuse in it's place to keep things legal, must have got a fault in the accident mister insurance man (or Woman).
    I was thinking of putting a switch in but was told tampering with ABS is illegal and can void insurance. I think it could save an accident.

    might try that 'take out fuse' trick.

    ABS in the D1 sucks on the tracks, lucky for me i am a slow driver.... lol

    I've had some issues with mine in the last couple of months, and like David, I had my fuse (10Amp under the dash for me) out on the same run last weekend,, all good, and haven't had any of the issues I've had of recent times.
    The only problem I had last weekend was brake fading,, not sure what pads are in there, but I dont think I like them

    yeah you don't want abs on slippery/soft/rocky surfaces.

    better off locking up and digging in to stop.

    D2 is the same,very hairy on loose gravel roads,you have to be very carefull,it just won't stop.......
    Haven't done enough muddy stuff with it to tell how it is,but it definitely chatters in the mud,& also loose sand.
