300Tdi - Head Gasket? and a few Questions

Evening all - I`ve just joined the ranks of Disco ownership after having several series vehicles (and one 1978 RRC).

I brought the truck (a 1994 TDi w/ 260k) for peanuts because the head gasket had gone and the interior was a bit grotty. This was what the previous owner had said - "the truck just got hot, no loss of coolant, so pulled over to cool then went home and parked it - had a mechanic look at it and he reckons its the head gasket"

But I don`t know if it is the head gasket or not...

Today I pulled the head and found the gasket looked okay - the coolant was still green, and the oil was black and not milky. It did look like a bit of blow-by on No.4 cylinder, but that may have been my imagination. All pistons had a wee bit of carbon deposit, but not excessive.

The head studs were for the most part evenly torqued, with a few around cyliner no. 4 seeming a bit less - but again could have been my imagination as they still needed a 24" snap-on breaker bar to bust loose...

I checked the head for warpage - less than .04mm all over, so less than spec (.08mm from RAVE), no cracks, no obvious porosity (and it`d be unlikely as there was no coolant loss).

In fact the only thing wrong I can see mechanically is that all the valve clearances were out, with all valve spring caps worn (one is a washer). The remainder of the valve train is within spec however.

The coolant, while grotty at least had antifreeze in it.

I`m doing the gasket anyway but I`d appreciate anyones opinion on whats up - it just seems weird to me.

As an aside - how clean should the head and block be before reinstalling the gasket? I`ve attached pics of both for appraisal.

Finally - did they all come with twin electric fans as well as the big viscous jobbie? Mines a NZ spec truck, and the fans look factory - seems overkill to me.

    Cheers, Nick

    First things first

Pull the radiator out and get it rodded and check its not blocked externally.

My radiator caused over heating in my disco with a 90% external block (mud that never washed out properly) and 20% internal. They are only little radiators and as soon as they start to block they feel it.

I would aslo change the thermostat as these too can fail, and relativley cheap to change anyway for peace of mind and knowing where your at with it.

If its not your radiator I would then look at the water pump..
Our Land Rover does not leak oil! it just marks its territory.......

    Hi Nick,
The electric fans will be for the air con condenser ( I take it you have aircon?)
plus the big viscous jobbie - sounds normal.
Good luck with the fault finding.
p.s - your picture wasnt attached.

while its off pull the water pump and check that, replace the thermostat and as mentioned get the radiator rodded.

How did the previous owner know that it got hot???

If he was just looking at the gauge, it could be something as simple as a faulty earth (quite common) which made it look as though it was overheating. i.e. The gauge said it was hot when actually it wasn't!

If that's the case, you're laughing.
