    D1 3 inch lift question

    hi all,

my 93 disco came 2nd hand with a 3 inch spring lift that used a 1.5 inch riser plate under ( i think) nissan springs in the rear and longer springs in the front with no risers.

it was a good set up, especially for touring, but because the riser plates are a rego/ insurance issue, I swapped the springs for dobinson 3 inch ( read 4 inch) and ditched the riser plates.

Yes, i know this doesn't necessarily solve the insurance/ rego issue but when i put a 2 inch lift in it was simply depressing....and the new 3 inch setup did pass rego with no problem at all.

    As it is now sitting almost an inch higher than before though, I am a bit concerned about adjusting the overall suspension geometry to suit;

    - however there is no vibration, it tracks well, drives well in all conditions including under load, so no hint at all that anything needs adjusting, but I am no expert -

so, do i need to go down the path of adjusting radius arms etc?

Any advice from people who have done this would be greatly appreciated..

When you lift a rover over 2''s you should go for some sort of castor correction kit, the best is probably the castor swivels option, or if you wanted something cheaper maybe some castor bushes, but these arn't as good as the swivels.
You could also get upgraded radious arms to suit the lift hight you have but that option is pretty expensive.

I'm running a 4'' suspension lift with no castor correction of any kind without any major drammers in my disco.
It isn't real happy on the road but you get use to it
I will get some sort of castor correction in the near future.

i found when i lifted mine the rear trailing arm upper chassis donut bushes were starting to flog out due to the large angle of the trailing arms after the lift.
I got hold of some angled/offset bushes from Les Richmond automotive and have had no probs since, another option to correct this problam is to get hold of some cranked trailing arms which are expensive.

Another thing to look at as well is your bumpstops, there is a fair chance you will have to extend them with the extra lift

P.s a wheel alignment is always good after a lift as well

Have a look at some of the British sites for Discovery parts, there are loads of parts for raising the suspension and keeping all the tracking ok etc without destroying your bushes.
If your car tracks ok you may not to have to do anything, some Discoveries don't like any lift at all, and some will go to two and three ins (rare) with no problems, the tolorences must be huge in manufacture!
Check all the suspension bushes and the uni joints on the props to see if there is any sign of increased wear, is it possible the previous owner has already corrected the castor?

At he end of the day, height = money, how high do you want to go?

if you went a genuine 3'' spring lift then it will steer and track like a shopping trolley, slotted swivells will bring your castor back.
what is your hub to guard measurement.
ie the measurement from the center of the wheel hub to the opening of the wheel arch, measured vertically?
the front should be around the 535mm mark and the rear 565mm

    cheers phil

Going higher that 2" will also flog out your uni's quicker too. SO keep an eye out for these. If you buy aftermarket radius arms to bring the castor back to standard, your uni's will be even more under load, especially the uni at the front diff end.

Slotted swivels are the go really, theres info on here on this as well. What I did was a 2" spring lift and a 2" body lift... but this still only gives me 2" lift at the chasis... so depends on what the lift is for.

I agree with crackerjack that the more " in height, the more $$ to shell out (ripple effect)

thanks for the feedback guys - i checked out the uk site paddocks for all the gear, yep , i could spend a small fortune there

shame the aussie dollar has taken a nose dive... still, half the fun of owning the disco is buying bits to bolt onto it...and I do have a spare arb bullbar in the garage I have been meaning to sell - that will mean less of hit to the hip pocket...

...just don't tell my wife, she never looks under the car and hopefully wont notice a thing

Yes, and also I got the "Why do you need to lift the car", "Why do you need more flex", "How much is that modification going to cost" etc etc etc etc
