Hi Jim, mine fell off down the road. Never missed it. Bit like an appendix - there must be a reason why its there, but things function just fine without it![]()
Just returned from Fraser Island and found the rubber mounted weight on the front axle had sheared and left dangling on the retaining wire. Had to cut the wire to release the weight. Local FWD mechanic at Rainbow Beach suggested to throw it away as it was a harmonic balance and I would not notice it,s absence. Is he correct, he has a Disco I for wrecking in his yard and i am thinking should I replace it while I have the chance.
Thanks Jim.

no need for the balancer....your mechanic is correct.
It's called a mass damper, as the fella's have said, it reduces harmonics.
A Defender doesn't run one.![]()
If you have a lift , I guess or a heavy load and the front is up, the RH spring can resonate quite loudly on long RH curves.
The fix if it happens is to push plastic tube over the spring wire.
AFAIK that is what the damper is there to reduce.

Took mine off as its hardly needed especially if your running aggressive tyres.
