    300Tdi not firing?

Evening all - as per an earlier post, I`ve just done the head on the Disco (it had warped and blown between 2 and 3), and put it all back together - now no go

Are these engines self-bleeding? Theres no sign of a priming pump anywhere..

The truck will spin happily, and feels like it wants to catch, but no boom. I`ve cracked the connectors onto the injectors, and diesel is getting up there - is it just a case of cranking it until it starts?

The wire is connected to the fuel stop solenoid, and diesel is getting to the injectors so I`m lost. I though with diesels, compression plus fuel = go...?

Only thing I can think of is that when I pulled the injectors to get the head machined, theres been air in the injectors / lines somehow?

Hope someone has some ideas here...

    Cheers, Nick

No these engines are not self bleeding. There is a lift pump on the RH block between the injector pump and vacuum pump. If you follow the fuel lines from the fuel filter one pipe will go to injector pump and the other is from the lift pump. There is a handle on under side of this pump, you may have to rotate the engine to get it to pump as it is operated by the cam shaft and may be on stroke.
Did you recheck the tappet adjustment after head was refitted?

It may be obvious, but is your glow-plug system operating correctly?

Thanks for the ideas guys - it turned out that having the head skimmed would necesitate adjusting the valve clearances to match (who`d have thought). Took the rocker cover off and did the clearances (after having to buy a viscous fan spanner - only $25NZD) - funnily enough there was no clearance whatsoever, so no compression

Set them all at .2mm, and the old girl started first go... typical.

How does one know if the glow plug system is working correctly?

by first measuring the individual resistance of each plug and then making sure that 12v is getting onto each plug

....but the TDi should start without glow plugs (even in winter).

Also, although there is a priming lever under the fuel pump, if you crank the engine over enough, it will prime itself.

you beat me to it mark. My disco fires in lithgow in the middle of winter without warming the plugs. Obviously it starts easier with them but a tdi will fire without them

Did the machinist that skimmed the head reset the valves deeper into the head to compensate for the amount removed from the head surface, if not when engine reaches operating temp. you could have piston and valve contact, BTW you should always reset/check valve clearance whenever rocker gear or head is removed, Regards Frank.
