Cool Pretty Dumb Question about the Antenna

    I have a 98 Disco TDI
I have put in a "car computer" months ago and I just cannot get the radio to find the stations.
Now I think I have covered everything computer wise (as I know my stuff there) but one question remains..............

Is the normal antenna for the Disco hanging off the inside Passenger side windscreen??
I think the answer to this is yes BUT

The wire that goes into this square box hanging off the windscreen is one solid copper wire surrounded by coaxial silver wire. But under the dash where I have the other end it is normal multi stream wire surrounded by coax.
I have used a multimeter on this and it shows connection, but I'm wondering if I have missed something like a booster box or something????

The car radio was working before I took it out.

The HQCT radio card I am using needs a 50 ohm Antenna, does anyone know what the Disco one is off hand or know how to measure it??

I just cannot tune into the stations and I'm sure it is an antenna problem. Any help???????????????

    thanks

Yes the antenna is on the glass at the rear in the "Cargo Area" of the vehicle. It should have a little amplifier plugged to the bottom of it. This then runs to your radio unit.
I'm sorry dont know what the resistance is of the antenna

Is the glass tinted by chance recently?
This may have an effect on the antenna pick-up especially if it is a metal tint.

    Cheers.

Where did you buy it? I seem to recall reading somewhere that radio's meant for os markets won't work in Aus... something about the frequency they are tuned to.

As sniegy said the radio antenna is on the REAR (cargo area) quarter panel glass on the driver's side. It is the three or so wires that run up and down the glass.
I believe 1998 was the year they changed to the wire antenna on the glass from a standard telescopic type on the front quarter panel.

The black box thing you are referring to on the windscreen is most likely the remnants of a mobile phone installation where they have pulled off the little antenna that sticks to the outside of the windscreen in alignment with the box on the inside. I don't think this will work as the radio antenna.

There should be a normal antenna plug behind the dash where the radio goes (for the proper radio antenna at the back).
You should just be able to plug it into the new radio and away you go.

The HQCTi works fine using any oz standard 75 ohm antenna (and in Disco's either earlier guard mounted or later on glass version with amp in liner above rear side window). Only thing you will need is a Motorola female plug to SMB coax plug adapter as the HQCTi use the euro plug antenna standard not US standard.

    Yeehaaa

    Thanks guys.

niceguy your explanation was spot on. The aerial I was using was an ex mobile Phone antenna.

You know I looked for another antenna and found nothing but I had another look today after your post and there it was!

All works. Thanks Cockie you're right, it all works.

When I plug my phone charger into the sigarette liter and charge my phone I loose 50-75% reception on the radio, go figure.

The only dumb question is the one un-asked
