    Crap on the open road

    Guys and Gals,

1995 Disco, 3.9i V8, bog standard except for old man emu shocks giving 1” lift, no catalytic converters.

This is the description of our recent trip to Sharm el Sheik and my trip later to Alexandria.

Loaded up and ready for 5 hours of highway driving, 5 mins in to the journey and the car starts to cough and splutter when I put the pedal to the metal for the first big hill, SO says, “I told you there was no power”, well, it seemed ok to me when I’d driven it earlier in the week, she says “that’s only around town, this happens on the highway”.
After 10 to 15 klicks of this it suddenly clears itself and roars away as sweet as a nut. The rest of the journey there and back is great. After a few days running around Maadi, a suburb of Cairo, and its back to it’s old self, coughing and spluttering when asked to climb a steep hill, tickover is bad, up and down until it settles down, nearly stalling when slowing down quickly.
A few days later I set off for Alexandria a 3 hour highway drive, it’s exactly the same to start with then clears itself and is lovely for the rest of the drive.

Fuel consumption around town is about 3km/litre but on the open road it’s nearer 5, anybody got any ideas? I recently changed the MAFF and checked the voltage, it’s around the correct voltage.
I’m thinking it may be leaky injectors, I would like to get the yellow ones for the Ford Mustang as I’ve read other posts here on AULRO saying they’re good and cheaper than LR standard ones, anybody have experience with them?

    Simon

I only really know about ignition problems. I imagine its getting hot under the bonnet, and cooling down on the highway. I have met plenty of weak ignition amplifiers, but not sure if it's all heat related. If it's fuel related, rich should show black smoke, lean should give poor power as well as popping in the inlet manifold under load.

I wonder if you guys get the same sticky valves that we get over here. It certainly sounds very similar. Is it generally driven gently?

Loanrangie, it was 2 seperate journeys.
Scouse, yes normally just tootling round town, it's only asked to work hard when we get out of town. I wondered if it was a sticky valve too, any easy cure?
Peppercorn, it's had a new pump and filter recently so can't see how it could be fuel problems.

Often a heavy dose of upper cylinder lubricant frees them up for a while. We used to suck it through one of the vacuum pipes & give the engine a rev tune. It did the job for a good few months.
