Scary - brake vacuum pump exploded!!

Well today coming home from landover's house after fitting some coil spacers I noticed that my brake pedal all of a sudden when very spongey. Soon as I got home I opened the bonnet to fine black oil everywhere which covered majority of the engine. Also noticed a ticking sound which I thought might have been something we forgot to tighten but it was the vaccum pump on my 300tdi disco. Just before getting home I basicaly had no brakes at all which was bloody scary!!! Luckily I got home and also picked up another brake vaccum pump a few days ago. The only sighn of it letting go was the famous oil leak from the unit itself. So guys if your vaccum pump is leaking tend to it right away as I can imagine it could have been slot worse!!!

Put the other pump on and all is good, brake performance is back and no more oil leaks!!

Yikes mine has a slow weep out from the gasket. Its "on the list" along with a few other things. Might have to move it up the list.

Just a quick question on your ticking noise, can you explain further? Under a fair engine load, as a guess more than 80% throttle, I have a weird faint tick tick tick. I havent really tried to diagnose yet, hoping if I ignore it it will go away haha

    Cheers

well my ticking noise was a all of a sudden thing while waiting at macdonalds. Ended Up going then coming back when I started to drive home and it was a constant ticking getting louder with the throttle. The think that was ticking was on the vaccum pump (on the face of it) you can see two round bits, one of them blew out and oil ****ing everywhere but that was the ticking noise that round bit.

Not to make light on the seriousness of the issue and need to maintain or replace, but.....

    Shouldn't a vacuum pump "implode"?
Everything else, like the oil everywhere, is a subsequent consequence of the destruction.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

yeah it should implode and being in a vaccum there wouldnt have been any sound

I have done my famous vaccum pump fix a couple of times now but i think its past it, mine just isnt holding vaccum now so if you pump the brakes you get a hard pedal and bugger all squeezing power.

I need to rebuilt my master cylinder and replace the pump. Matt
