Thread: Damned viscous fan - won't come out!!

    jazzaD1, as nice1guv has mentioned above, I'm guessing there's a hint of loctite in there somewhere, as the waterpump looks relatively new.

    Hitting it, or beating hell out of it as I have done so far, is no problem
    Getting enough grip to get the benefit of the hitting/beating/chiselling is the problem.

    I have bent screwdrivers, several other tools of flat, metallic appearance, and several fingers. Not quite sure where to go next.

    and just for double checking ...
    You sure your going the right direction? ... I know the "V belts" go clockwise ... (The same way that the fan turns ... is the direction that the nut comes off)

    to increase the grip offered by the belt on the pully (this wrecks the belt) tie a lenght of rope around the belt on one side of the pully and then repeat it on the other side of the pully, start to turn the pully and as the belt runs round it it will drag the rope with it then start to put pressure on the rope pulling the slack out of the belt.

    Everything I've read says that the serpentine era V8 is a standard thread, so undoes anticlockwise (lefty loosey). And to confirm that, the replacement viscous and water pump I have sitting here are definitely a standard thread.

    Believe me, when I started having difficulties undoing the damned thing, I checked, rechecked, triple checked and quadruple checked that I was going the right way.

    So, some piccies. Not sure if you can make out any detail:

    I'm not worried about wrecking the belt, it's pretty much on it's last legs anyway - cracked to hell.

    I've removed the alternator, tensioner, mountings and moved the air con pump out of the way to try and improve access. I guess I'll have to put it all back together!

    Took mine off my d2 last weekend, a **** of a job without the right tool, ended up jaming the knurled adjuster off a stilson wrench and jammed it between the two pulleys ( crank and water pump) then used a big shifter with sone extra length tube to get more leverage. Not the best way but it worked and didn't brake anything.

    nahh

    get some rubber gloves, lay them around the pully then wrap some rope around it, 3 turns (telstra rope works really well) then anchor the end and have at it using the rope to hold the pully.

    loosen off one of the bolts on the pully put a ring spanner on it and then turn the pump till the handle of the spanner fouls on the viscous boss, use the boss and the bolt as the first 2 parts of a lever and your hand to provide the load, then undo the viscus nut.

    use a large stilson on the pully

    use a chain grip pipe wrench (or make one)

    use a cam and strap filter wrench

    and thats close to but not quite the end of the easy solutions that dont involve the word "weld"

    Put the belt back on and definitely hit that one to the left when facing the rear of the car (same direction the fan rotates).

    It took me about three days of swearing at it on and off to release mine. Did all the things mentioned except tying the belt and no good, could not stop it turning. I eventually took one of the pulley bolts out and screwed some flat steel to it and braced it against the Alt. Put my 450mm spanner on it and belted the crap out of it. Looking from the front hit it from right to left towards the Alt. All of a sudden it finally went. Once cracked comes away easy. Persistence pays off.

    Many thanks to all who replied, but my hat is well and truly doffed to Blknight.aus. The rope, rubber glove and stilson trick worked wonders. I was standing on the bumper, pushing down with all my weight when it popped and nearly went face down in the inlet manifold, but hey, it's off!

    Who needs to spend a fortune on special tools when a couple of metres of scabby old rope, 20c worth of rubber gloves and a real lardarse pushing hard can do the job.

    And to confirm beyond all doubt - it's lefty loosey for a serpentine V8
