A very slight possibilty that it is either part of the radiator I.E. a flow restristor given that it is brass/copper, or part of a temporary repair to a hose at some point? Either way, no it isn't supposed to be there

Water pump on my Disco 300 TDi gave up on Friday and started leaking (badly). Stripped it down today and found this behind the water pump in the water pump housing!

I have looked through the manuals and can't find any reference to it! Does any one know what it is?
I have had the Disco 4 months and the previous owner had it for 3 years and he gave me all the receits for work done on it. There is no reference in the receipts of the water pump being changed so it has been in there for quite a few years.
Cheers,
Phil.

a late reply, I know, but...
i have also found one of those things in my cooling system! it is plastic and looks like a small hose fitting. i asked my local NatRad guy (who regularly helps with my Tdi) and he said that it doesn't belong there.
i found it half way up the bottom radiator hose - it had twisted around and made the hose swell a bit. i had to replace the head, possibly as a result of this thing.
no suggestions as to it's origins though.
Does it fit inside the lower hose connection of the radiator, or a thermostat housing, acting as an anti-crush tube to a plastic fitting? How about the bottom of the coolant reservoir?
I believe it is a fitting from inside the hose, as rockley12 said, I had one come loose in the bottom radiator hose where the smaller pipe joins the larger, it was jammed sideways and almost blocking the hose completely, try squeezing the hose around the junction it should feel hard, if not that's where it came from, Regards Frank.
I think Tank (Frank) is correct. Your bottom radiator hose may need replacing as a result

Checked lower radiator hose and both junctions (one for the expansion tank and the other for heater matrix) can be squizzed, new hose on order.
Cheers,
Phil.
